Penguins fall to Eagles

IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican softball dropped 9-0 and 4-0 games to No. 15 Concordia University Irvine in a doubleheader Monday that opened the final leg of their trip at Golden Eagles Field.

Shelby Keltner went 1-for-1 with two walks to go with 4 innings pitched and three strikeouts in the first game for the Penguins (16-21, 11-10 PacWest).

Game one
Melissa Garcia was hit by a pitch and Keltner drew a walk to get a runner into scoring position for Dominican in the top of the first inning, but it was unable to cash in as Katlin Entrup induced a groundout to short to end the threat for the Golden Eagles (39-9, 24-4 PacWest). Keltner was strong in the bottom of the frame striking out two of the four batters she faced.

Keltner added her third strikeout of the game in the bottom of the second inning as she left a runner stranded at second. Kate Tobola then led off the top of the third with a bunt single back to the pitcher, but she was caught stealing second and Entrup retired the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.

Kaia Nisby singled to center to lead off the bottom of the third for CUI and Megan Massa followed with one of her own to put two runners on with no outs. Annabelle Burke charged in to grab a popup on an attempted sacrifice bunt to get the first out, but Sydney Sprinkle singled to center to bring one runner in. Rylie Rohr added an RBI single to left field two batters later to give the Golden Eagles the 2-0 lead.

The CUI offense exploded as Keltner left the circle with Sprinkle homering to add two runs in the fifth, before she added two more RBI in the five-run sixth inning that ended the game for the 9-0 Golden Eagle victory.

Game two
Rohr doubled to right center and came home on a sacrifice fly to open the scoring in the second game for CUI as they took a 1-0 lead after two innings. Taylor Rodriguez limited the damage for Dominican as she stranded three runners in the first three innings to keep the game close.

Marina Medina and Melissa Garcia each singled in the early part of the game but were unable to move past first as Daniela Alvarez kept the Penguin bats cool. The Golden Eagles went on to add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Kaia Nisby singled to left to bring in one run and Dani Cole singled to right to bring in another. Alicia Garcia made a fantastic play throwing to second to get Cole out as she tried to extend her hit to end the fourth with Dominican trailing 3-0.

A pair of singles by Massa and Rohr brought in the fourth run of the game for CUI in the bottom of the fifth and it was all the room they would need as Alvarez never allowed a base runner past first in the game.

Dominican will conclude its road trip with a doubleheader Tuesday against the Golden Eagles beginning at 2 p.m. PDT at Golden Eagles Field.
