San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California (2-0, 5-6) welcome itself back to its home field with a 2-game sweep of Bay Area rival Academy of Art University (0-2, 3-13) by the scores of 2-0 and 3-1.
GAME ONE
The familiar tune of a
Shelby Keltner dominant performance headlined the opening game on Tuesday as she pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out seven. The senior sensation is already sitting fourth in the conference with a combined ERA of 1.10 while leading the conference in total strikeouts with 62 despite starting anywhere from two to seven games less than anyone else in the top-10 for that statistical category.
Freshman Kate Tabola continues to impress in the early goings of her introductory season as her fifth inning 2-RBI double was what proved the difference offensively as she was the only person to help any players see their way across home plate in the opening game. Sophomore
Caitlyn Perales put herself on first base after she singled to the shortstop before senior
Faith Erb eventually reached second base on a throwing error by the third baseman, also advancing Perales to third. The runners finding the bases on back-to-back at bats set the stage for Tobola before hitting what would be the game winner into deep left center.
Despite the score sheet looking crowded in the final inning, the nitty-gritty details show an inning-opening walk given up by Keltner, only her second of the afternoon, before ART U put a pinch-runner in place of the walked batter. Two batters later, the Urban Knights put another on base after a passed ball but this would be as close as they came with Keltner striking out the final two batters of the game to help her team savor their energy without needing to play the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore
Melissa Garcia, senior
Celeste Salas, freshman
Marina Medina and Keltner also added hits in the victory.
GAME TWO
Freshman
Jayla Cadena continued her string of hot starts as she captured her third win of the season, pitching four innings while allowing just two hits and a single earned run while also helping herself on the other side of the mound with an RBI that came in the second inning. Lapinid and Perales also notched RBIs while both Lapinid and Taboloa tallied a pair of hits in the preceding game.
Taboloa gave the opposition no time to settle in as she led off with a single back to the pitcher before Garcia advanced her to third base on a sacrifice bunt. The selflessness continued as Lapinid sent a high fly ball into center, deep enough to bring Tobola home to notch the first run of the game just three batters in. The Dominican lead was doubled in the next inning after Keltner reached first base on a muffed throw before freshman
Alexis Abalos was put in her place to pitch run. Abalos did her job perfectly as she stole second, then advancing to third on a Perales sacrifice bunt before the Cadena double put Dominican up by a pair.
The final Penguin score came in the next inning after Lapinid his a leadoff single into right before advancing to second during the team's next at-bat, then advancing to third on a while put a batter later. Perales brought her home moments after with a single to left second that gave Dominican a 3-0 lead with ART U able to find a single hit up until this point. That streak soon ended as a pair of hits led to the eventual lone run for the Urban Knights, before freshman
Taylor Rodriguez was brought in to seal the deal, doing just that with a one-hit, three inning performance to help give Dominican it's second win of the day.
Domincian now looks ahead to Friday when it travels south to pay visit to Biola.
