SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis edged out Stanislaus State 4-3 as four of six singles point went an extra game Sunday afternoon at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Gina Dudley and
Audrey Rafols got the Penguins (2-3) off to a brilliant start as they swept Amber Huk and Alyssa Tay 6-0 in No. 1 doubles.
Carolina Guerrero and
Zoe Coggins then secured the doubles point for Dominican as they won No. 3 doubles 6-1 over their Warrior (1-3) counterparts.
The lead would be short lived for Dominican as Tay claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory in No. 3 singles to level the match before Annabelle Mulick gave Stanislaus State the lead with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 4 singles.
Haley Garcia halted the Warriors momentum as she followed up a 6-3 victory in the first set to claim a crucial game in the second to claim the 7-5 victory and tie the team score 2-2.
Coggins battled Kate Bolton in No. 5 singles in an extremely tight set as both players traded games in the first set to a 6-6 tie and then did nearly the same in the tiebreaker but Coggins held on for the 7-6 (5) victory. The second set was also tightly contested but this time Coggins was able to get a crucial break to win 6-4 and put Dominican within one point of the clinch.
No. 26 Rafols faced off with Huk in the tightest match of the entire day as neither player could gain much separation needing tiebreakers in both sets. In the first set neither Huk nor Rafols could gain a significant edge in points as both players sat tied 7-7 needing extra points to decide the set. Rafols claimed the next two points to win 7-6 (7). After once again needing a tiebreaker in the second set, this time Rafols was able to get a slight edge in the tiebreaker to win 7-6 (4) to clinch the victory for the Penguins.
Dominican will travel to Southern California to take on Cal State LA at 1:30 p.m. PST at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
