IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican softball was unable to hold on to its upset bid over No. 11 Cal State San Marcos falling 3-2 in the final inning of play at the Great Park.
Lauren Lapinid led the way from the plate for the Penguins (1-1) going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Jayla Cadena got the first start of her Dominican career and pitched 3.1 innings allowing one run while
Taylor Rodriguez came in for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in her first action from the circle. Bianca Gutierrez proved to be the hero for the Cougars (2-0) as she hit a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the seventh to retake the lead, while Jaylin Sloss earned the victory after pitching two shutout innings in relief.
The pitchers ruled the first two innings of the game, but CSUSM struck first in the top of the third as Madison Waymire walked and advanced to second on a double steal before Paige Donnelly knocked her in with a single just past a diving glove of the shortstop to take the 1-0 lead. Dominican though answered immediately as
Melissa Garcia and
Caitlyn Perales singled with two outs before
Lauren Lapinid doubled down the right-field line to bring both home and give the Penguins the 2-1 lead.
Dominican looked to add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth as Kama Kaleikini walked and Cadena singled to left center to put her in scoring position, but a groundout got the Cougars out of the jam to keep the score within one. CSUSM looked to tie the game in the top of the sixth as Gianna Lombardi singled on a sharply hit ball back to the pitcher with Klarissa Munoz coming in to pinch run for her. Munoz advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and looked to tie the game on a single to center but the relay throws caught her at the plate to keep the Penguins in front.
The Cougars once again worked their way into scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh as Waymire and Donnelly walked before Gutierrez sent her game-winning double to the wall in center field to score both and take the 3-2 lead and secure the victory.
Dominican will return to the diamond Saturday to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1:30 p.m. PST at the Great Park Field 1.
