Oakland, CALIF. – Dominican University of California (16-10, 14-5) played its last ever game against Holy Names University (2-24, 1-18), ending in a 90-58 victory.
Senior
Brittney Cedeno finished with another incredible stat line as she continues to lead the way in scoring, netting 19 points while adding nine rebounds. Juniors
Jenna Duley and
Olga Faasolo, sophomore
Alaiyah San Juan and freshman
Keyonee Neal all finished with double-digit scoring numbers, earning 15, 11, 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Penguins marched out to an 8-0 streak behind three Neal buckets that came within two and half minutes of one another. Dominican's next run was separated by just one Hawks' basket before going on another streak, this time a 7-0 advantage that saw its crowning moment from beyond the arc when San Juan drained a 3-pointer. Dominican never let its foot off the gas at any point in the opening frame, finishing with a 27-11 basket after Duley and Neal both hit long balls to end the opening frame.
The Neal basket was part of a 14--0 run that lasted only three minutes as the Penguins went five straight possessions without missing a shot, made even more impressive by the fact that four of those baskets came from behind the 3-point line. The end of the quarter ended the same way it started as Cedeno tallied one final 3-pointer before the teams broke to the locker rooms with Dominican holding a commanding 42-21 advantage.
The rain kept pouring as Dominican's first bucket again came from deep, this time courtesy of
Jenna Duley. The teams, rather uncharacteristically, traded baskets throughout the first four minutes of the second half but that pattern came to an abrupt halt when San Juan and Duley both buried 3-pointers with Duley netting them on back-to-back possessions. San Juan decided it was of no worth to change the storyline of how the quarters ended so one last 3-pointer came from her hands before the teams broke to their respective benches with Dominican leading 72-36 after three quarters.
The entirety of the final frame was spent swapping points as the last 10 minutes ended with the two sides only be separated by a single point in the final frame, but it was Dominican that left the Tobin gymnasium for one final time with a 90-58 win. Dominican now looks ahead to Sunday for a non-conference matchup against UC Santa Cruz before hosting The Academy of Art on senior night.
