SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer held on to a first half lead to finish its final road trip of the regular season with a 2-0 victory Saturday morning over Westmont at Thorrington Field.
Dominican's defense did a good job limiting opportunities in the first half allowing only two shots with one on goal. Dominican meanwhile generated several goal scoring opportunities but it was not until the 29th minute when a Westmont defender committed a costly mistake in the box as a misplayed pass bounced right to
Dimani Mathlin who beat the keeper to the left for a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of Mathlin's collegiate career.
The Penguins nearly added to their lead in 42nd minute as a
Joe Blakely timed a runwell to get behind the defense and sent a strong shot high on goal but Brady Highfill was able to deflect it away from the net. The rebound fell to the feet at
Cole Porter who aimed at the open net and let it rip, but a Warrior defender was able to get a toe on it to keep it out of the net and remain a goal behind at the break.
Lex Bernier made his presence felt in the early in the second half as he had a pair of shots within the first five minutes of the period forcing Highfill to make a save in the 50th minute to keep the game close. Westmont made a late push as Michael Stull took advantage of a loose ball in the 78th minute to try and equal a score with only the keeper to beat but Reyes made a diving save to slow the shot and then jumped on the loose ball in his box to preserve the lead.
The Warriors once again had a prime opportunity in the 83rd minute as they got the ball into the box and eventually getting it to the feet of Erik Guerrero who put a shot towards the lower right corner, but Reyes again dove to push the ball wide and his defense cleared the ball to relieve the pressure. Reyes finished his day with five saves.
In the 88th minute, Bernier raced to a ball put forward by
Brian Diaz and kept it from crossing the backline for a goal kick before turning and finding Grande in front of the net for a goal to the near post for the 2-0 lead, slamming the door shut on the Warrior comeback hopes. It was the 12th goal of the season for Grande, the most in the PacWest this season.
Dominican will wrap up its season at home as it hosts Fresno Pacific for Senior Day on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. PST.
