IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer was able to limit No. 12 Concordia University Irvine on offense but ultimately fell 1-0 Monday afternoon at Golden Eagle Field.
The Penguins (3-8-1, 0-4-1 PacWest) faced heavy pressure from the Golden Eagles (9-1-0, 4-0-0 PacWest) throughout the match, but made sure the quality of chances remained low.
Natalie Haro made sure to not let anything easy past her making six saves from her net.
After a largely uneventful 25 minutes, Olivia Ocampo put a ball into the box that took an unfortunate deflection off a defender and forced Haro to make a diving save to prevent the own goal. Val Cortez jumped on the rebound and put it home for the 1-0 CUI lead in the 26th minute.
Dominican was able to get some positive field position early in the second half as
Alejandra Melendez found some room for a shot in the 54th minute but it went wide.
Eryn Tufts then made a move in the 58th minute to free herself for a shot towards the upper-right corner but the attempt missed the frame. The Golden Eagles mustered only one more quality attempt as Bella Barrett got a head to the ball off a corner putting it towards the net but
Abigail Estes was there to head the ball over the bar before it could cross the goal line to keep her team within one.
Dominican will return to the Bay Area and rest up before heading south to take on UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at UCSC Soccer Complex with kickoff time of 4 p.m. PDT.
