IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer found the offense it had been missing and then held on for a 5-3 victory Monday afternoon against Concordia University Irvine to conclude is Southern California road trip at Golden Eagles Field.
Five different players scored for the Penguins (5-4-2, 3-1-1 PacWest) who made the most of their attempts scoring on over half of their shots on goal.
Alejandro Reyes collected seven saves to keep the Golden Eagles (2-7-0, 1-3-0 PacWest) from ever taking a lead.
CUI had an early chance to open the scoring as Kevin Sanchez sent in a shot in the ninth minute but it careened off the right post to keep the game scoreless. Dominican made the most of its first opportunity as
Lex Bernier sent a cross in from the right sideline to
Jesus Duran in the center of the box and he left no doubt as he headed the ball into the upper part of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Chris Mendez-Lemus nearly doubled the lead in 28th minute as Bernier crossed a ball back to him at the top of the box and he sent a ball towards the right post but Andre Flores barely got a left hand on the ball to steer it wide.
The Penguins carried their momentum into the second half and after earning a corner kick in the 49th minute,
Nico Flores place a ball perfectly to
Brandon Selway inside the 6-yard box and he headed it down into the goal for the 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles did not have a shot on goal until the 52nd minute off the foot of Jahir Sandoval who placed it well from distance, but
Alejandro Reyes was there to push it over the bar and preserve his lead.
CUI maintained their pressure for the next four minutes until Dominican broke away in a three-on-one as
Dimani Mathlin played a ball forward to
Diego Grande who crossed it back to
Lex Bernier in space inside the 18-yard box and he quickly put the ball home for the 3-0 lead. The Penguins continued to prove opportunistic as a poorly placed backpass was easily collected by
Elias Muro inside the box and he beat the keeper to his left to take the 4-0 lead in the 71st minute.
The Golden Eagles were able to get one back in the 73rd minute as Alfonso Montano cashed in on some quality cross to close the gap to 4-1. Mikel Villareal took another ball down the left side and chipped it into Kevin Sanchez who knocked it in to cut the deficit in half in the 78th minute. One minute later a free kick from Jahir Sandoval found the head of Ryan Smith for third goal in the six-minute stretch to cut the CIU deficit to a single goal. Grande added an insurance goal in the 90th minute who took a bad pass deked out a center back and beat the keeper to the lower-right corner for the 5-3 lead.
Dominican will return to the Bay Area as it takes on future conference member Menlo on Thursday at Wunderlich Field.
