San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California (12-8, 10-3) dropped its first game since Dec. 12 as Concordia University at Irvine (14-4, 11-1) walked away with a 64-59 victory to extended its win streak to nine.
Freshman
Keyonee Neal added yet another impressive stat line to an already phenomenal freshman campaign, scoring 21 points while adding seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks and an assist. Redshirt senior
Brittney Cedeno netted 13 points in addition to nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block while also converting on an electric play that included a block, rebound and pull-up 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to bring her team within a single point of the Eagles' lead. Junior
Mikayla Amoroso rounded out the trio of double digit scorers, tallying 10 points on the afternoon.
An 8-2 CUI run gave the visitors a 13-6 lead at the midway point of the first quarter before Cedeno snapped the streak with a midrange jumper. Neal tallied Dominican's next four points while the Eagles added a basket of its own before the final basket came from deep for CUI to give it an 18-12 lead after 10 minutes.
The Eagles earned a game-high 12-point lead on a pair of layups and a slew of free throws that put them up big with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Dominican used the rest of the half to put itself back in the drivers seat as an 11-0 run catapulted the Penguins back into the lead, a run that was capped off by a Neal layup that came after she left her defender behind before burying an off-balance, underhanded layup that was assisted by sophomore
Alex Salise. Neal added another moments later after CUI retook the lead, but a late 5-0 CUI run but the visitors up with 58 seconds remaining in the half. Cedeno added a pair of successful free throws with just 12 ticks left on the clock to set the score at 34-31 in favor of CUI as the teams left to their opposing locker rooms.
A 5-0 Dominican run immediately gave Dominican the lead back when the teams retook the floor, but CUI matched with a 7-0 run to put itself back up six. The teams traded baskets down the stretch in the third frame with the Eagles eventually taking a nine-point, 51-42 into the final frame. In similar fashion to 10 minutes earlier, the final quarter started with a Penguins run, this time a 7-0 streak that brought the game back to a single possession differential. The fireworks ensued with just over a minute remaining when Salise connected on a driving layup to bring Dominican back within four.
On the next possession, Cedeno did what would be unthinkable for most players when she sprinted across the defensive end to swat the ball from a previously unguarded Eagles player before corralling the rebound and storming up the court. She then dished the ball off to San Juan who quickly returned the favor with Cedeno standing six feet behind the 3-point line on the PacWest logo. Cedeno then sent a shot from way deep towards the rim, connecting on a long 3-pointer with 45 seconds left in the game before celebrating with the crowd as CUI called a timeout. Dominican forced a miss shot on the defensive end but could not grab the final all-important rebound which left it with no choice but to foul as the Eagles would eventually walk away with a 64-59 win over the Penguins.
