Back-to-back buckets courtesy of McCutchen and Volz set the early tone for Dominican who soon found itself up by five after a Volz 3-pointer minutes later. Graduate student
Justin Brown found the score sheet for the first time on the afternoon from the foul line before earning a layup a pair of possessions after, a much-needed tally as the teams matched one another basket-for-basket. Dominican's defense and offense paired well as they came together to ensure Dominican never trailed in the first half, highlighted by a Volz block midway through the opening quarter after Dominican retook the lead following CUI tying the game at 20 aside. The Eagles again chipped at the lead and were able to tie the matchup with 4:24 remaining in the frame but in similar fashion, a Volz play on the defensive end, this time in the form of a block, helped Dominican regain the lead as Siebels buried a long ball on the ensuing possession to put Dominican back in the drivers seat before taking a 39-34 lead into the locker rooms.
Dominican immediately extended its lead to 11 after a pair of Volz 3-pointers on ensuing possessions gave the Penguins a 45-34 lead. Brown provided a thunderous slam to help Dominican regain a double-digit lead after sharp shooting brought the Eagles closer in the matchup, a pattern that proved true moments later after Brown's dunk was matched with a CUI 3-pointer on the following possession. CUI continued to chip away at the lead until they face a depleted deficit of just 5-points with over 13 minutes still remaining but a 7-0 Dominican run would be capped off with a midrange jumper courtesy of sophomore
Jake Blazona that put Dominican back up 12. Back-to-back Bush layups and a pair of McCutchen charity shot preceded a Volz tipped ball that found Bush on the defensive end before Bush returned the favor by dishing a pass that led to a two-handed slam by Volz to put Dominican up 17.
The Volz slam marked the last time Dominican would score for nearly five and a half minutes as a 13-0 CUI run made the game competitive with just shy of three minutes remaining. A pair of successful Bush charity shots put Dominican back on the board before Brown matched an Eagles 3-pointer with a with a layup. The squads traded baskets in opposing fashion, this time CUI earning a layup that was matched by a Siebels long ball that gave Dominican the breath of life it needed to eventually finish the contest with a 73-67 victory over the Eagles.
