PJ Volz added a 3-pointer after a Dominican stop, preceding another Bush bucket to set the score to 12-6 with Dominican enjoying a 10-0 run less than four minutes into the matchup. The Penguins lead by as many as eight in the early going after Bush converted on a contested layup from under the rim but Chaminade used the remainder of the half clawing back into the game while eventually trailing by a single basket with 5:14 remaining. Justin Brown muscled his way to his first basket of the game to put Dominican back up four when he received a pass in the paint before backing down his defender to create space for the turn around lay-in. Chaminade benefited from long sharp shooting, burying five in the first half before tying the game with 20 seconds left to send the teams into the locker rooms knotted at 33-33.
The squads traded baskets to begin the second half with Bush nailing his first 3-pointer of the game just 1:39 into the stanza. A series of mini-runs gave Chaminade momentum that it would carry throughout the remainder of the game. The home side found its first double-digit lead with 8:38 remaining in the game, a pattern that would hold until the final horn despite Dominican's best efforts to keep the opposing team close.
Dominican now looks ahead to Thursday, Jan. 19 when it welcomes conference undefeated Point Loma to the Conlan Center.
