Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Penguins fall to Seawovles

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-13, 25-12, 25-18 in its final match of the NorCal Kickoff to Sonoma State on Saturday at the Wolves' Den.

Freshman middle Avery Schneider led the Penguins with five kills and two blocks on the night, while freshman outside Jasmine Heyward also had five kills and senior setter Gabi Maiocco added 12 assists. Jen Trephan led the Seawolves with a double-double of 10 kills and 13 assists.

Kalli Spooner had back-to-back kills to open the match to give SSU the 3-0 lead early. Dominican kept things close and freshman Sara Hiebert combined with Gabi Maiocco for a block and Heyward found the floor for her first kill to get back within one, but Trephan served up a pair of aces to go with a kill to lead a 6-0 run that extended the lead to 13-6. Schneider ended the run with a kill and then capped off a quick 3-point burst from the Penguins as she combined with Amani Abed for a block as Dominican kept things close. The Seawolves had other ideas as they closed the set on an 8-0 run to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

Sonoma State once again pulled ahead early in the second set with a pair of small runs capped by an ace from Kaden Young to take the 11-4 lead. Dominican was unable to find its swings in the set as the Seawolves continued to add to their lead eventually taking the set, 25-12.

After SSU opened the third set on a 5-0 run it looked as though they would cruise again, but Dominican would not go down without a fight. Heyward found the floor on back-to-back kills to start a run and Schneider added one of her own before Ella Heckman served up an ace to close the deficit to one just minutes later. After the Seawolves slowly rebuilt their 5-point advantage, the Penguins once again began to charge back as Schneider ended one 3-0 run with a solo block before Heckman highlighted a 4-0 run with an ace to help Dominican take an 18-17 lead and force SSU to take a timeout. The Seawolves regrouped during the timeout and went on an 8-0 tear to close the door on the Dominican comeback.

The Penguins will begin conference play Friday against Concordia University Irvine at 6 p.m. PDT Friday at the Conlan Center.
