Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second half offense fuels Penguins victory

HILO, Hawai'i – Dominican men's soccer lived inside its attacking third in the second half as it pulled away for the 3-1 victory Monday afternoon over the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at the UHH Soccer Field.

The Penguins goals came from Brian Sanchez, Aboubacar Cisse and Nick van der Waart van Gulik in its high scoring second half. When the final whistle blew, it was Dominican with a 12-2 advantage in shots with five on frame and 12 corners.

The Penguins pressured early with Cisse loosing a shot on frame in the fourth minute, but Anree Bogart was there to make the save for the Vulcans. Tom Vorkastner got UHH on the board first with its first shot of the match as he deked past a defender to his right and sent a shot left for the 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.

Bogart made two more saves in the half to keep the lead for his team despite constant pressure from the Penguins. The pressure finally paid off when a handball inside the box sent Sanchez to the spot where he buried the penalty into the left netting to tie things up 1-1 in the 49th minute.

Dominican did not let up and Dominic Galleti was taken down as he moved inside the top right corner of the box to set up another penalty kick. This time it was Cisse that stepped to the spot and he buried the ball dead center as the keeper dove to his left to take the 2-1 lead in the 56th minute. Sanchez set up the final goal of the game as he sent a free kick towards the far post where a waiting van der Waart van Gulik was able to get a piece of the ball to knock it inside the post for the 3-1 lead in the 78th minute.

Dominican will head next to Oahu to take on Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m. HST at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
