SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fought hard but were unable to overcome Chico State in its second game of the NorCal Kickoff falling 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 Friday afternoon at the Conlan Center.

Ella Heckman led the Penguins with seven kills, nine digs and a block, while freshman outside hitter
Jasmine Heyward finished with five kills and five digs. Grace Shepard led the Wildcats with nine kills with Lexi Carpenter adding 13 digs from her libero position.
Bree Rodriguez led Chico State early with three kills to help build a 10-3 lead as Dominican eased its way into the match. The Wildcats pushed their lead to double digits at 20-10 after a kill by Jane Mcnulty but Dominican quickly turned up the heat. Senior setter
Gabi Maiocco set the tone from the service line as she recorded a pair of aces while also causing a pair of overpasses that resulted in kills from Heckman and
Amani Abed during an 8-0 run that closed the deficit to two. Chico State was able to rebound and end the set on a 5-1 run to hold off the Penguins.
Brooke Ono spread the ball around to several different attackers to open the second set on a 5-0 run for the Wildcats, capitalizing on the momentum after the victory in the first set. Another 5-0 run led by a kill and a block from Ono helped Chico State extend its lead to 14-4. Dominican was unable to mount a comeback this time as the Wildcats traded points with the Penguins for the remainder of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Strong blocking helped Chico State once again build an early 3-0 lead in the third set but Dominican did not allow things to get out of hand slowly chipping away until
Vanna Marquez served up an ace to tie the set 10-10. Shepherd answered by bookending a 4-0 run with a pair of kills, but the pesky Penguins began to slowly chip away once again. Maiocco had another service ace while Heckman added a kill in a 6-2 run that closed the deficit to 21-20, but the Wildcats scrapped together one last 4-0 run behind two kills from Shepherd to clinch the match.
