LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 to Biola Saturday afternoon at the Chase Gymnasium.
Senior
Vanna Marquez had a great game from her libero spot as she finished the match with 16 digs to go with an ace for the Penguins. Sophomore outside
Ella Heckman had her second great match in a row as she finished with seven kills and two service aces. The Eagles were led by eight kills and five aces from Anna Aubele as they finished with a .280 hitting percentage as a team.
Biola had a strong start as Katie Cook had a pair of aces during a 9-0 run to take the eight-point lead. Heckman helped cut into that lead with a pair of aces of her own to make it 10-5, but Aubele answered with three aces as the service line continued to be the main source of points for both teams. Heckman led one final 3-point burst for Dominican with back-to-back kills but it would not be enough as the Eagles took the opening set for the 1-0 lead in the match.
Once again it was Biola that built the early lead as Aubele had two kills and Bri Bellfi added a pair of aces to make it 8-1. The Penguins showed their grit on defense to keep the ball alive and lead to kills by
Avery Schneider and
Jasmine Heyward during a 4-point run that trimmed the deficit to three. The teams continued to trade points until a 7-0 Eagle run built a double-digit lead as they held off a late surge by Dominican for a 25-16 victory.
The Penguins got off to a much better start in the third set as they were able to keep the set within 1-point until Madison Beebe had a kill and an ace during a 3-0 run that made it 9-5. Dominican chipped away at the lead as
Amani Abed found the floor on a kill from the middle to cut back within two. Biola once again pulled away late with Aubele leading the charge with a kill and two aces to open a 6-0 run as they closed out the sweep.
Dominican will return home to take on cross-bay rival Holy Names University on Firday at 6 p.m. PDT at Tobin Gymnasium.
