Hayward, CALIF. — Senior midfielder/defensive specialist
Aiden Marquez netted her first goal in a Dominican uniform in the early stages of the match to help lift Dominican (2-2-2) over Holy Names (4-2-0) on the road.
Dominican's offense was shot out of a cannon in the early stages with graduate student
Marissa Ray forcing the Hawks' keeper to make her first save in the seventh minute of the game. Unable to corral the rebound, Marquez gathered the ball seconds later and fired a goal into the back of the net, marking the senior sensation's first ever collegiate goal as she spend the vast majority of her time keeping the ball out of her net rather than burying goals of her own.
Holy Names battles back in the 10th minute with a shot off the left woodwork before forcing senior keeper
Jolie Poulet to make her first save of the game a moment later. Poulet's next save came in the 25th minute after a shot by Natalie Lara found the target, but the senior was again up to the task before earning the same result in the 29th minute with a save on a ball that was heading towards the bottom left corner. Junior
Mallory Thomas was the last to test a keeper before the end of the half, but her shot sailed wide left as Dominican left the field with a one-goal advantage at the half.
Poulet etched another save on the score sheet in just the second minute of the half on a ball that was target towards the top left corner. The second half saw both teams spending the majority of the team trading position while trying to get an edge on the other squad, but neither side was able to make a difference on the stat sheet as Marquez's early goal earned Dominican a 1-0 victory over Holy Names.
Dominican will now bring its talents back home to Kennelly field with a midweek matinee against San Francisco State on Tuesday.
