Senior setter
Gabi Maiocco once again led the way for the Penguins (0-3) with four kills to go with 11 assists and three digs. The Otters (2-0) were led by seven kills and two aces from Savanna Maker.
The teams traded the first few points of the match until Kaylie Honberger served up a pair of aces to lead a 5-0 run for CSUMB to take a 10-5 lead. Dominican cut into the lead minutes later as
Amani Abed found the floor on a kill to start a 3-point run with
Ella Heckman ending it with a service ace to cut the lead to 14-11. The Otters though did not allow the Penguins any closer using several small runs to pull away for the 25-15 opening set victory.
CSUMB got off to a strong start in the second as Ashley Vanderpan served up a pair of aces before Savanna Maker and Mikayla Nolte combined for a block to cap a 5-0 run to open the set. Errors helped Dominican close the gap and
Vanna Marquez served up an ace to close the deficit to 6-5. Maker had two aces in a 4-0 run that extended the Otters' lead to 13-6 and the Penguins were unable to sustain any further runs in the set as they fell behind 2-0 in the match.
It was all CSUMB in the final set of the match as Maker recorded two kills and a block while Vanderpan had two more service aces to open a 6-0 lead. The lead continued to grow as the Otters hit .364 in the set to seal the sweep.
Dominican will host Cal State East Bay on Thursday in its home opener at 7:30 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center in the opening match of the NorCal Kickoff.
