Despite besting Stanislaus State (0-0-1) in virtually every offensive stat, the Penguins (0-0-1) and Warriors drew even in both programs' first game of the season.
Freshman
Carmi Dotario and senior
Tanya Bills found the back of the net for the Penguins, but late-half surges helped Stanislaus even the score. Dotario netted the Penguins' first tally of the season in the 30th minute when she fired a shot that sailed past the goalkeeper and into the right lower-90, earning the goal on the team's eighth shot of the game. This lead held until the 44th minute of the half when Stanislaus evened the score with its first of two late-half goals, this one coming off the foot of Alisha Garcia. The goal resulted in a knotted game at the half with the two teams walking to their respective sides with a goal apiece.
Dominican took the halftime talk from head coach
Kelly Coffey and associate head coach
Kellis Johnson to heart, with the words proving themselves just 112 seconds into the second half as Bills, in similar fashion to Dotario, sent a ball screeching into the right lower-90 to help her team regain the advantage. The Warriors came close to tying the game in the 79th minute when a strike from Jackzeny Mancilla rang the crossbar. Stanislaus was eventually able to draw even just a pair of minutes later when it returned to the attack, resulting in an Alexis Brewah tally that tied the game. Dominican keeper
Angelina Hert provided her team with late-game heroics as she kept the score even with a trio of saves over the ensuing five minutes to help her team off the field with a 2-2 draw in its season-opener.
Sophomore
Ireland O'Donnell finished the match with an astonishing six shots as four found the target, followed by Bills and Dotario who statted four and three shots, respectively. The team finished with an 18-16 advantage in total shots while finding the target five more times than the Warriors, also earning five corner kicks in comparison to Stanislaus' three.
Dominican now sets its sights to Saturday when it comes to Kennelly Field for its home opener against Cal Poly Humboldt.
