ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis bounced back with a commanding 7-0 victory Saturday over William Jessup at Lifetime Fitness.
Freshmen
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley opened the match with a 6-2 victory for the Penguins (1-1) in No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Zoe Coggins and freshman
Julia Rydel got locked into a tight battle in No. 2 doubles with Sydney Page and Danielle Akabane for the Warriors (0-2) trading games to a 5-5 tie. Coggins and Rydel got the break point they needed late as they grabbed the 7-5 victory and gave Dominican the 1-0 lead in the match.
Coggins kept the momentum going in singles play as she dispatched Akabane 6-0, 6-0 on court five. Rydel was close behind her with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of her own in No. 4 singles over Page. Graduate
Gigi Alajeely sealed the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two, while Dudley added a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Aysha Hayes in No. 1 singles. Junior
Haley Garcia was the last Penguin playing as she took the first set 6-2, but McKenzie Hawkins answered with a 6-3 victory to send the match into a tiebreaker set. It was a seesaw battle in the tiebreaker with Garcia doing just enough to take it 11-9 and secure the sweep for Dominican.
The Penguins will hit the road as it travels to the islands of Hawaii to take on three PacWest foes beginning Friday with Chaminade at 3 p.m. HST at Central Oahu Regional Park.
