Penguins swept by Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball struggled to find its offensive footing against No. 3 Concordia University Irvine as the Eagles (16-0, 4-0 PacWest) won 5-1 and 7-0 Friday afternoon at Penguin Field.

"I'm proud of how we came out ready to play and competed in game one," head coach Juliana Santos said. "If we can learn from our mistakes and make the routine plays, we can hang with the best of teams."

Lauren Lapinid led the Penguins (3-10, 0-4 PacWest) with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate with a double, a walk and a run scored. Megan Massa went 5-for-7 for the Eagles with three doubles and four runs scored.

Game one
Massa wasted no time in getting CUI off to a strong start as she sent the second pitch she saw into left center for a double to lead off the game. Sydney Sprinkle singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw home to hold Massa at third. Riley Rohr stepped to the plate with two outs and tripled to deep center to score both and give the Eagles the 2-0 lead.

After a runner reached on an error, Massa doubled once again this time to left field to bring home one before scoring on a Sprinkle single to right to double the lead to 4-0. Lapinid doubled to left to lead off the bottom of the second for Dominican's first hit of the game. After stealing third, Lapinid crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to three runs.

After the pitchers held their counterparts scoreless for the next two innings, Miss Nemeth doubled to center for the Eagles to lead off the top of the fifth. Rohr singled to put runners at the corners before Danielle Michaels dropped a bunt back to the pitcher and Rohr slid past the tag for the 5-1 lead. Both offenses were stymied for the final two innings as that remained the final margin.

Game two
Massa continued to do damage from the plate in the second game leading off with a double to right center and eventually coming home on a soft grounder to second for the 1-0 CUI lead after one. Lapinid singled to right and Melissa Garcia followed with a walk to put two runners on with no outs, but Courtney Koelmans got the next batter swinging before grabbing a line drive and tossing it over to first for an inning-ending double play.

Massa once again was the spark for the Eagles in the third as she singled to left before Lauren Lopez singled on a bunt to put two runners on with one out. Sprinkle drove both home with a double to right for the 3-0 lead. Alicia Garcia drew a walk to begin the bottom of the frame moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Melissa Garcia then singled to center advancing to second on a throw home that kept Alicia Garcia at third. Koelmans escaped once again with a strikeout to preserve her shutout.

Rohr flashed her power with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth for CUI and Shelli Faulk followed up with a home run of her own over the left-field wall to extend the lead to 6-0. The Penguins were unable to find any more offensive success with a Rohr solo shot being the only other run of the game as the Eagles took the 7-0 victory.

Dominican will return to the diamond Monday as it hosts Biola in a doubleheader beginning at noon PST.
