AZUSA, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball fell 76-51 Friday night to Azusa Pacific in its final road game of the season at the Felix Event Center.
"Tough night for us on the road," head coach
Justin Argenal said. "Things got out of hand and we were unable to weather the storm. All credit to APU. We did some good things early but turnovers and open 3's enabled them to separate from us."
Zamaria Odom led the Penguins (7-16, 3-12 PacWest) with 12 points and four rebounds, while
Justin Brown chipped in 10 points on 50% shooting from the floor. Ken West led the Cougars (14-6, 10-2 PacWest) with 19 points with Justin Hemsley finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Odom broke a back-and-forth battle in the opening half with a pair of 3-pointers the second on a step back that made it 17-13 in favor of Dominican with 9:14 to go until the half.
Anthony Dennis then threaded a pass to Brown down low for a two-handed slam and then found an open
Chase Anderson behind the arc to extend the lead to seven with 7:39 left on the clock.
APU then found its 3-point stroke as Hemsley, Ben Avera and Terrence Becvar all knocked down shots from distance during a 15-0 run that saw them swing the lead to 30-22 in favor of the Cougars with five minutes until the break. Avera hit another 3-pointer in the middle of a 7-0 run that extended the APU lead into double-digits before Hemsley knocked down a three at the buzzer to make it 40-26 at the half.
Nate Kleppe and Hayden Gray got in on the shooting barrage both knocking down 3-pointers to extend the Cougar lead to 21 two minutes into the second half. Brown and Dennis each made moves in the paint to push the lead back under 20 for Dominican. Jake Balzona capped a 6-0 run with a floating jumper that cut the deficit to 52-38 with 14:10 remaining, but Hemsley answer with four quick points and Hayden Gray took a stolen ball the other way for a dunk to quickly push the lead back to 20. Dominican was unable to string together stops and scores down the stretch as APU continued to add to its lead for the final 12 minutes of play.
Dominican will return home Tuesday to take on Hawaii Pacific at 7:30 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center.
