Dominican drops defensive battle in overtime to Point Loma

San Diego, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California women's basketball (2-6, 0-2) fell in overtime by a score of 60-58 to Point Loma University (4-5, 2-0) on Saturday.

Dominican to an eight point lead into the half but was unable to earn double digit points in any of the ensuing quarters as the Sea Lions' defense clamped down on the Penguins, allowing just 22 Penguin points over the last 22 minutes of play. Freshman Keyonee Neal saw her biggest performance of her young career, earning 13 points on 50% shooting while adding four rebounds, all career highs. Junior Olga Faasolo led all Dominican scorers with 15 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of assists while sophomore Alex Salise rounded out the top-3 scorers with 12 points in addition to six rebounds. Redshirt senior Brittney Cedeno snagged seven rebounds with five steals.

A quick 8-2 Point Loma run to start the game meant Dominican was chasing for much of the first frame as Dominican spent all but 52 seconds down but not out. Cedeno helped Dominican to its first lead with 52 seconds remaining after a pair of successful free throws that were followed by Jordan Charlton steal seconds later. Neal finished the quarter with a layup, giving Dominican a 15-12 lead that it would take to the second quarter as Dominican's efforts yielded reward in the form of a completed first quarter comeback. Salise drained a 3-pointer 60 seconds into the second quarter to put Dominican up six with the leading increasing to nine after Faasolo drained a layup and short jumped following a Sea Lions free throw. Point Loma pulled within a basket as the script was flipped in the second quarter with Point Loma playing chase, but Dominican again earned a large advantage being up by as many as 10 after a Neal jumped with 75 seconds remaining. Point Loma added a basket before the end of the half but it was Dominican that walked into the locker rooms with a 36-28 lead.

The Sea Lions defense was on full display in the third quarter as Dominican saw nearly nine minutes come off the clock between between Salise's layup 1:03 into the quarter and sophomore Alaiyah San Juan's 3-pointer that came with nine seconds remaining, separated by a handful of free throws. To the Penguins enjoyment, it's defense was also on full display as it allowed just five buckets to come from the field in the quarter as the team held onto its lead from defensive side of the floor. The battle of two immovable objects meant the teams only combined for 24 points in the quarter as Dominican held onto a 45-43 advantage.

The defensive battle from the third quarter was just a warmup for what would happen in the fourth quarter as both teams allowed just three baskets from the field in the fourth frame. Dominican was awarded good fortune as the Sea Lions had a chance to go up by a point with Ellie Turk headed to the charity stripe with 31 seconds left down by a single point, but a 1-for-2 trip from the line meant the two teams were bound for overtime. Salise tallied Dominican's first three points of the extra frame to put her team up two after a successful free throw by the home team, but baskets on three consecutive trips down the floor put Point Loma up four. Cedeno cut the lead in half with a fast break layup but another free throw put the opposing side up three. Two more free throws would be all the Penguins added down the stretch as the Sea Lions eventually earned a closely contested 60-58 win in overtime.

Dominican is now set to return home for a five-game home stand starting on Dec. 10 against Fresno Pacific.
