SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
PJ Volz exploded in the first half to lead Dominican men's basketball to a 92-86 victory over Biola on Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Center.
Volz scored a career-high 29 points to go with five rebounds and two steals for the Penguins (7-4, 4-1 PacWest).
Jaayden Bush added 16 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals. Alex Wright led the Eagles (7-4, 3-2 PacWest) with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Alex Wright added a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds for Biola.
Dominican started the game on a 5-0 run as Bush made an acrobatic layup before stealing a ball on the other end and dishing it to
Marcus McCutchen for a layup through contact for an old-fashioned 3-point play. The Eagles began to feel it from deep as Daniel Esparza and Erik Howlin knocked down a pair to lead a 10-2 run to take the lead. Volz provided the response for the Penguins as he scored seven-straight for the Penguins to tie the game 12-12 with 15:41 remaining.
Garrett Siebels converted a tough layup to give Dominican back the lead, but Nathan Medina capped a 5-0 Eagle run with a cutting layup.
Tyler Williams began the comeback as he laid the ball in before McCutchen stole the ball and got a lay-in get the Penguins back within one.
Jake Blazona then knocked down a jumper inside the paint to give Dominican the lead with
Shafee Mumin connected on a pair of free throws to make it 26-23 with 9:30 left in the half.
Williams continued to play well off the bench as he finished through contact for an old-fashioned 3-point play and Bush then grabbed a defensive rebound and sent a long bounce pass to Williams for an easy bucket to make it 31-26 with 8:08 showing on the clock. Volz followed up a
Justin Brown hook shot by beating the shot clock from the top of the arc to extend the Dominican lead to double digits at 39-28 with 4:12 remaining in the half.
Volz added to the Penguins lead as he drew a foul on a 3-pointer and sank all three of his attempts from the charity stripe with McCutchen adding a fastbreak layup through contact. Bush capped off the furious half ending run with a steal and a fastbreak layup to send Dominican into the locker room leading 48-30.
Volz opened the half with a steal and a dunk for the Penguins, but Biola began to chip away at the lead. Nathan Medina capped a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer and layup to cut the lead to 60-49 with 13:55 left on the clock.
Jorden Josephs knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing and
Matthew Hallam got a rebound and a putback to stop the run as Dominican answered with a 9-point run of its own to take the 20-point lead with 12 minutes left in the game.
Biola went on a 14-0 run capped after an offensive rebound led to a Medina 3-pointer that cut the lead to 71-65 with 6:19 remaining. The teams began to trade buckets with Dominican maintaining its advantage over the next three minutes. McCutchen broke the seesaw with a pair of free throws with 3:27 remaining to give the Penguins the 81-71 lead.
Wright knocked down three shots from the charity stripe after he was fouled beyond the arc to cut the Dominican lead to 83-78 with 1:45 on the clock. Dominican was able to ice the game from the free-throw line to extend its win streak to three.
The Penguins complete their homestand Monday as they take on Azusa Pacific at 3 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center.
