San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California women's soccer (5-7-5, 1-5-2) fell by a score of 3-1 to California University of Irvine (11-4-2, 6-2-1) on Kennelly Field on Thursday.
A quite first half in the goal column started with a pair of saves from freshman keeper Angelina Hert before the 10-minute mark. Dominican's first attempt came off the foot of senior
Gabrielle Wampler, but the ball sailed wide of the frame. The closest attempt of the first came in the 43rd minute when CUI's Olivia Ocampo sent a strike towards the bottom right of the goal, a shot that was met by a diving Hert as she used her fingertips to direct the ball wide of the goal to keep the score at 0-0 going into the half.
The Golden Eagle offense came alive early and often in the second half, tallying its first goal just three minutes in when a corner kick eventually found Daniela Filpovic before finding the back of the net, setting the score to 1-0. CUI then doubled its lead in the 67th minute with a Brianna Guerra goal, increasing the lead to 2-0 with 23 minutes remaining.
Dominican battled back with a goal of its own courtesy of junior
Jackie Lancaster who buried a pass from senior
Alana Berens, giving Domincan life in the 87th minute. The celebration was short-lived as the Golden Eagles answered back just 30 seconds later with a rocket that grazed the crossbar before bouncing directly down and over the goal line, giving CUI a 3-1 lead that held to the end of the match.
