Fresno, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California (2-2) handed Cal State Monterrey Bay (3-1) its first loss of the season with an overtime score of 64-58 behind sophomore Alaiyah San Juan's eight overtime points.
Dominican continues to find its footing from the field, gutting out a gritty win despite shooting 27.3% from the field. The Penguins improved on that percentage each quarter, eventually shooting the lights out when it counted most as they converted on 66.7% of its shot from the field in overtime. Dominican earned 26 points in the paint, largely courtesy of newcomers Amelia Brady and Olga Faasolo who combined for a 22 total points, earning 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Brady's totals are the first of what surely will be many shining performances as the 6-foot-4 freshman earned 21 minutes of playing time, the most in her very young collegiate career.
San Juan laid claim of her space in the scorers column, getting back to her old ways as she notched 18 points with eight coming in the mos important minutes of the game, tallying 75% of Dominican's overtime points. The sophomore shot 66.7% from 3-point land while most of the team struggled to find consistency from deep, anchoring the ship against a formerly undefeated Otters squad. Redshirt senior
Brittney Cedeno does what she does on the defensive end with 14 rebounds, five steals and a block against an CSUMB squad that was averaging 69 points before scoring just 58 against the Penguins.
Junior newcomer Jenna Duley rounded out the players with double-digit points, joining San Juan, Brady and Faasolo in the leading scorers column. The Penguin newcomers combined for 38 of the team's 62 points as the chemistry continues to click on the fresh season. Dominican found itself trailing by six heading into the final frame, but back-to-back Duley layups steadied the ship and cut the to just two before sophomore Alex Salise tied the game at 41 apiece. Dominican went on a timely 6-0 run late in the quarter courtesy of a pair of successful free throws, followed by jumpers from San Juan and Faasolo that put Dominican up five. The Otters battled back to force overtime, but Dominican's defense squeezed any potential life out of the CSUMB offense as the team allowed just two points — a pair of free throws — over the final four minutes of overtime. San Juan earned six consecutive points during this time, eventually leading to the 64-58 victory.
Dominican now looks ahead to Tuesday when it plays host to a very strong East Bay squad.
