SAN DIEGO – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-0 (25-7, 25-10, 25-15) Friday night to Point Loma Nazarene University to open its final road trip of the season at Golden Gymnasium.
Ella Heckman led the Penguins with eight kills on a .375 hitting percentage, while
Amani Abed finished with six kills. Grace Hicks led the Sea Lions with eight kills and three blocks while Abigail Nua finished with seven kills and three aces.
Heckman kept Dominican close early in the first set as she had all three of the Penguins' kills and they trailed by one, but a 6-1 run sparked by Torina Hommes pushed PLNU ahead 11-5. The Sea Lions continued to add to its lead as they pulled away for the 25-7 victory.
PLNU quickly jumped ahead in the second set with a 4-0 run, but
Amani Abed put down an overpass for a kill and Kendall Kibanoff added an ace in a 3-point run that helped Dominican get back within one. Nua then led the Sea Lions on a 7-0 run with three aces to take an 11-4 advantage. The Penguins were unable to slow them down the remainder of the set as they fell behind 2-0 in the match with the 25-10 loss in the set.
Dominican had a much stronger start to the third set as another Abed kill off an overpass highlighted a 3-0 run that gave it the 7-4 lead. Hommes capped a 3-0 response from PLNU to quickly tie the set and Hicks then sparked a 4-0 run with a kill to retake the 11-8 lead. The teams traded points for several minutes but a pair of kills from Hicks powered a 5-0 Sea Lion run to expand the lead to seven and they were able to close out the sweep.
Dominican will conclude its road trip Saturday at Concordia University Irvine with the first serve set for 3 p.m. PDT at CU Arena.
