OAKLAND, Calif. –
Anthony Dennis beat his former team with a layup with .5 seconds remaining to give Dominican men's basketball the 72-70 victory Sunday afternoon over Holy Names at Tobin Gymnasium.
Dennis finished with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Penguins (6-12, 3-9 PacWest), while
Adam Parker chipped in 23 points of his own. The Hawks (5-13, 3-7 PacWest) were led by Edward Gray's 33 points, many coming in the second half. Dominican shot 50% from the field and held HNU to 37.3% shooting.
"Once again we did a great job in the first half of defending and executing," head coach
Justin Argenal said. "We held HNU to 15 total points and no threes through 20 minutes. The challenge at halftime was to come out and put another 20 minutes together. I'm extremely proud of the fight we showed down the stretch. So many ups and downs, but we responded each time with big plays on both ends. Very happy for Anthony as he made two huge plays in overtime to seal the W."
The Hawks scored their first five points of the extra period from the charity stripe to pull ahead, but Dominican was able to keep the game within a single point for much of the next four minutes. Dennis then kicked a ball to Parker on the right-wing for a long 3-pointer to give Dominican the 68-66 lead, but Gray drove the lane and finished through contact to tie the game with 41 seconds remaining. The teams traded layups until Dennis drove the ball into the key, took a jump stop that left his defender on the ground and laid it off the glass with .5 seconds left on the clock to send the Penguins back home with the victory.
Justin Brown bounced a pass across the key to
Connor McClean in the opening minutes of the game and McClean laid it off the glass to spark a Dominican run.
Jake Blazona then connected on a floating jump shot before Dennis connected from midrange to increase the Penguins' lead to 8-4 with 14 minutes remaining in the half. Parker capped the 13-2 run with a 25-foot 3-pointer to expand the lead to nine at the 9:37 mark.
Dominican went cold from the field over the next four minutes and Sam Gold took advantage of a pair of second-chance opportunities and then three HNU free-throws closed the gap to 15-13 with 4:30 left in the first half. After trading buckets in a very defensive-oriented final four minutes, Babacar Thiombane picked up a foul on a Dennis drive and then threw the ball toward the ceiling in frustration picking up a technical foul helping put the Penguins ahead by six.
Michael Diaz then beat the buzzer on a driving layup to make it 23-15 at the half.
Thiombane started off the second half knocking down a shot from distance and Gray converted a 3-point play to close the Hawks' deficit to two in the first two minutes. Dominican answered with some solid defense resulting in a pair of steals followed by some quick ball movement to convert the turnovers into points. Blazona found Parker in the left corner on the first turnover for a 3-pointer with the ball barely touching the floor then Blazona drove into the lane on the next possession and kicked it to Parker on the right wing for another 3-pointer to push the lead to 31-21 with 16:42 remaining in the game.
An errant pass fell into the hands of Dennis who took the ball untouched for a two-handed slam to keep the run going and push the lead to 13 at the 15-minute mark as the ball seemed to be bouncing the Penguins way. Dominican held HNU without a field goal for seven minutes during the 14-1 run ended when Gray drove down the lane for a layup with 11:22 left in the game to make it 37-24. Gray was able to cap the quick 6-0 run with a pair of free throws to cut the lead back to single digits at 37-28 a minute later.
Michael Diaz broke a seesaw battle three minutes later with a pair of midrange jumpers before driving down the lane and finishing through contact to make it 48-35 while Thiombane fouled out on the play with 6:39 remaining. Dominican held its double-digit lead for the next four minutes with Gray once again bringing it back to single digits on a pair of free throws as Dominican's big man Brown fouled out. A turnover on an inbound pass led to a Roman Behrens 3-point play as the Hawks cut the lead to 52-48 with two minutes remaining, but Dennis found Parker for an easy layup after they broke the press to push the lead back to six.
Gray continued to provide the offense down the stretch converting on a 3-point play before knocking down a 3-pointer from the right corner to tie the game at 57 with 16 seconds remaining. The Hawks thought they had won in regulation but the inbound pass was ruled to have gone into the cylinder before being touched by any player sending the game to overtime.
Dominican will return home to take on UC Santa Cruz Wednesday at 7 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center.
