HONOLULU – Dominican Men's Basketball fell 84-64 to Chaminade on Saturday afternoon at McCabe Gym.
"We knew coming here Chaminade was going to bring it with their energy and physicality," head coach
Justin Argenal said. "I thought we played hard but we seemed to be a step slow. We pride ourselves defensively in holding teams to 60 or less and tonight things got out of hand. You'll never win on the road when you turn the ball over 21 times."
Michael Diaz led a late charge to try and get the Penguins (5-10, 2-6 PacWest) back in the game finishing with 12 points and two steals.
Adam Parker added 15 points and eight rebounds, while
Chase Anderson chipped in 12 points. Zach McIntire led Silverswords (6-8, 4-4 PacWest) with 19 points and seven rebounds while Paris Taylor finished with 17 points and seven boards.
The game was a physical from the opening tip with Isaac Amaral-Artharee powering a 7-2 run with four points ending it with a floater that put his team on top 9-5 four minutes into the game. Anderson kept the game close for Dominican knocking down a pair of jumpers, but Taylor led the charge on the other end with four points to cap a 6-0 run that gave Chaminade the 19-11 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
Chaminade was able to push their lead into double figures off a Raazhel Watkins steal and layup to make it 25-15 with 8:13 remaining in the half. The teams traded points for most of the final minutes of the half until Taylor found himself all alone under the hoop for a pair of layups to push the lead to 13 with 40 seconds remaining.The momentum was short lived as
Jorden Josephs answered with a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the Silversword lead to 36-26 at the half.
Chaminade continued to find offensive success in the second half as Joseph Smoyer knocked down a 3-pointer and McIntire scored the next three to push the lead to 44-28 with 17:20 left in the game. After trading buckets for the next three minutes, Sawyer Storms knocked down a corner 3-pointer in transition to extend the Silversword lead to 53-34.
Chaminade pushed its advantage over 20 for several minutes but Diaz knocked down three consecutive shots from behind the arc and scored 10 consecutive points fort Dominican to claw back within 13 at 73-60 with three minutes left in the game. It was as close as the Penguins would get as the Silverswords held on over the final minutes to secure the victory.
Dominican concludes its Hawaiian road trip at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo on Monday at 7:30 p.m. HST.
