Penguins fall in straight sets to Silverswords

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) Wednesday night to Chaminade at the Conlan Center.

Senior outside hitter Mariah Ahid led the Penguins (0-13, 0-4 PacWest) with six kills and three blocks while freshman middle Ella Jimenez added four kills and four blocks. Lataisia Saulala led the Silverswords (13-3, 3-1 PacWest) with nine kills and two blocks, while Annah Rivera had seven kills and eight digs.

Dominican got out to a strong start as Batinkova sparked a 6-1 run early with a kill to take the 7-3 lead. After a kill from Pelton extended the Penguin lead to six, Chaminade began their march back as Kendall Rios sparked the 7-0 run with an ace and a kill to take the 13-12 lead. Saulala sparked a 4-0 run for the Silverswords moments later as they extended their lead to four. The teams traded points for much of the remainder of the set as Chaminade took the 1-0 lead.

The Silverswords maintained the momentum to begin the second set as Brooklen Pe'a had a kill and a block to take the 3-0 lead. The teams continued to trade points with Chaminade methodically extending its lead to 5 by the midway point of the set. Pe'a and Rivera each then had a pair of kills in a 5-0 run that gave the Silverswords a 22-13 lead and they held on for the set victory despite a late charge by the Penguins.

Dominican continued to play well to begin the third set matching Chaminade point-for-point to a 13-13 tie. Saulala powered a 7-1 run with a kill and a block to help the Silverswords gain some distance as the Penguins began to commit several errors late. Chaminade held on to secure the sweep.

The Penguins will be back in action Friday to take on Hawai'i Pacific at 7 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Center.
