Penguins fall in PacWest opener

SAN DIEGO – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 Thursday night to Point Loma Nazarene University at Golden Gymnasium.

Junior middle hitter Edee Leslie led the Penguins (0-10, 0-1 PacWest) with four kills, while freshman middle hitter Ella Jimenez collected four blocks. Anna Massari led the Sea Lions (7-4, 3-0 PacWest) with eight kills and three blocks.

Dominican got off to a strong start in the first set as junior defensive specialist Vanna Marquez served up an ace and freshman outside hitter Devon Condie added a kill to extend the lead to 6-3. PLNU flipped the script as Tate Duane led a 5-0 run with a pair of kills to take the two point advantage. The Sea Lions then took advantage of several Penguin errors to extend their lead to 17-9 as they rolled to the opening set victory.

Dominican grabbed the early momentum once again in the second set as Leslie opened the set with a kill and senior libero Samantha Brown served up an ace to take a 3-0 lead, but PLNU quickly responded with a 3-0 burst of their own to tie the set. Courtney Dyer had two aces and kept the Penguins off balance with a strong service game to help the Sea Lions extend the lead to 10-5 moments later. Dominican battled back as senior outside hitter Tiffany Wong found the floor for a kill and sophomore defensive specialist Sophia Hull added an ace to cut the deficit to two. Once again errors undid the Dominican momentum as PLNU pulled away on a 9-1 run on their way to the 25-17 set victory.

The Sea Lions then kept the momentum rolling into the third set as Alexis Soncrant had three aces in the opening moments of the first set to build a 6-0 lead. The lead grew as large as 11 as Dominican was unable to find much success on offense.

The Penguins will continue their brief trip to Southern California on Friday against Azusa Pacific at the Felix Events Center.
