Penguins fly to 3-0 victory over flightless Sunbirds

Dominican University earned its second win of the season as it swept the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific University (25-20,25-23, 25-13).

"There is a lot of positives from the younger players that are first time college athletes," head coach Fred Lin said. "We got more confident towards the end and we were able to utilize what we do in practice to win the game."

The Penguins won the first set with 17 kills on a 0.304 hitting percentage. Dominican jumped out to an early 8-1 which swiftly prompted an immediate timeout by the Sunbirds, resulting in a 9-2 run by the Sunbirds between ensuing timeouts. Senior Catherine Johnson led the attack early on for the Penguins as she accounted for three of Dominican's first six points, all kills.

"Having my teammates call for their sets really cleared their blockers up, that was the key, "Johnson said. "Just getting those clear shots and taking the swing."

Dominican again found itself with a five point advantage halfway through the set as a pair of Sunbirds attack errors helped give the Penguins a 16-12 lead. Sophomore Edee Leslie recorded a kill soon after to push Dominican to 18 points before a pair of attacks from senior Rebecca Smith gave the Penguins a 21-16 advantage. Smith would later put her finishing touch on the set as she emphatically ended the frame with a swing that gave Dominican the 25-20 opening set win. Smith finished the set with five kills and an astonishing .571 kill percentage, while Leslie tallied a pair of blocks.

The two teams traded points for the entirety of the second set as neither team led by more than three scores. The set ultimately came down to the wire as a hitting error put Fresno Pacific up 21-19, but Dominican would soon turn the tables as it finished out on a 6-2 run courtesy of a pair of Johnson kills and a service ace from senior Eleni Loizou. Johnson led the way in the attack column, adding six kills in the set, while sophomore Vanna Marquez recorded nine successful serve receptions.

Dominican owned the third and final set, garnering large leads for the entirety of the set. Junior Mariah Ahid claimed her territory at the net halfway through the set, tallying a pair of huge blocks that gave Dominican a 15-6 advantage before an Amani Abed kill sealed the victory for the Penguins.

"We've been really working on blocking in practice and pressing at the net," Ahid said. "We scouted them previously so we knew what to do before hand."

Tiffany Wong led all Dominican defenders with 19 digs, while Johnson finished with 10 kills on a .421 attacking percentage. Smith and junior Haley Frederking were busy in the assist column, both earning double digit assists with 20 and 17, respectively.

Dominican now looks ahead to next Wednesday when it travels to Oakland to take on Holy Names University.
