ANGWIN, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball captured its largest set victory of the season as it defeated Pacific Union College 25-18, 21-25, 25-9, 25-18 Sunday evening at Pacific Auditorium.
Junior outside hitter
Mariah Ahid led the way for the Penguins (3-3) with 12 kills on a .346 hitting percentage. Dominican spread the ball around with 12 different players recording kills while limiting the Pioneers (0-19) to a -.008 hitting percentage.
PUC got off to a strong start in the first set building a 5-1 lead by taking advantage of several Penguin errors. Dominican used several small runs to slowly chip away at the lead with junior setter
Haley Frederking serving up an ace that tied the set 10-10. Junior defensive specialist
Samantha Brown then sparked a 5-0 run with an ace to give the Penguins their first lead at 15-12. Ahid capped a late 7-1 run with back-to-back kills to give Dominican the six-point advantage on its way to the victory.
Errors once again gave the Pioneers the lead early in the second set as they build a 5-0 lead. Ahid once again put down a pair of powerful kills to help the Penguins cut the lead to two, but errors plagued them once again as PUC extended its lead to 12-5. Dominican made a late 6-0 run to close the gap to two after a kill by Ahid, but the Pioneers' Emma Campbell found the floor for a kill to stop the run and an error gave them the 25-21 set two victory.

Edee Leslie served up an ace for the 5-1 lead. The Penguins continued to ride the momentum as freshman defensive specialist
Sophia Hull oversaw a 10-0 run with two aces to push the lead to 21-5 as they coasted to victory.
The teams traded points early in the fourth set until a series of PUC errors aided a 5-0 Dominican run to give them the 12-6 advantage. The Penguins extended their lead to eight late in the match following kills by freshmen
Sydney Thompson and
Amani Abed as they were able to hold on to for the 25-18 set victory to claim the match.
