Balanced scoring gave the Penguins a 66-56 win over the Academy of Art on Saturday as 10 of 11 Penguins found the score sheet.
In the final game of the shortened season, Dominican came out firing as it opened the game on a 6-0 run to force an early Urban Knights timeout. The Penguins didn't trail the Urban Knights for a single second in this contest, spending the final 29:47 of the game in the drivers' seat after
Jordan Williams connected on a layup to put them up 12-10. The Williams layup kick started a 9-0 Penguins run that was capped off by a
Christian Futch layup with 8:21 remaining.
Thomas Faustka converted baskets on back-to-back trips down the floor late in the half to put Dominican up 32-19 before the Academy of Art mixed in a couple baskets of its own. Ultimately,
Chase Anderson topped off the opening frame with a layup that gave Dominican a 34-24 lead heading into the half.
Déjà vu occurred as, in similar fashion to the first half, Dominican jumped out on a 6-0 run to start the second half with Futch burying a pair of baskets before Williams earned another pair of points. A strong
Romeo Mays and-1 gave Dominican a 19-point lead with 16:59 remaining after he connected on his charity shot, and the Urban Knight were on their heels as they continuously found themselves out of reach of the lead.
Dominican got into foul trouble late in the half as Faustka, Mays and Futch would all eventually foul out of the contest before Futch was ejected from the game with 4:53 remaining. Momentum started to swing back to the Academy of Art as it found itself on a 9-0 run while Dominican was dealing with its foul woes, but Mays hit a jumper from inside the paint — before he fouled out —to put Dominican back up by 12 as it led 65-53 late in the game.
With the seniors subbed out for the final minute of the concluding game of the 2021 season, the bench was subbed in for Dominican to finish the contest.
Connor McClean was one of those freshmen that was subbed in, marking the first time his feet found a collegiate court in a game, and he celebrate his first point as a college basketball player before the horn sounded. McClean's point would be the final point of the season for the Penguins as Dominican walked away with a 66-56 victory.
Williams (13), Futch (12) and Ragsdale (11) lead in points for Dominican while Ragsdale's 10 rebounds helped him earn a double-double in the seasons' final game.
