FRESNO, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 Saturday afternoon to Fresno Pacific at the Special Events Center.
Senior setter
Rebecca Smith recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 assists and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter
Tiffany Wong added six kills, 10 digs and a block for the Penguins (0-2, 0-2 PacWest). Corinne Acosta led the Sunbirds (6-3, 2-0 PacWest) with a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs, while Makena Ogas finished with 16 kills and four blocks.
Catie Speas and broke a seesaw battle to open the first set with a pair of kills and a block to spark a 4-point run that gave FPU the 9-5 lead. Ogas then mimicked her teammate moments later with two kills and a block during a 5-0 run that extended the lead to eight at the midway point of the set. The Sunbirds continued to pull away as Acosta found the floor with a kill to push the lead to double digits as they went on to take the first set 25-13.
Sophomore middle blocker
Teddy Batinkova set the tone for the Penguins early in the second set as she assisted on two blocks to push the Penguins out to a quick 3-0 lead. FPU slowly pushed their way back into a tie on a kill from Ogas and an attack error gave them the 9-8 lead. Ogas then took control with a block and four kills to extend the lead to 16-9 in favor of the Sunbirds. Dominican was unable to recover as FPU took the second set for the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Penguins once again started strong as Johnson put down back-to-back kills to take an early 3-0 lead, but Corinne Acosta helped swing the momentum back to the Sunbirds with a pair of kills and a block in an 8-1 run to take the four point advantage. Emma Hartvickson provided a spark off the bench for Dominican with three kills while Batinkova added a kill and a block assist to score seven unanswered to tie the set. The teams began to trade points until two kills and an ace by Ogas late helped the Sunbirds build a narrow three-point advantage as they went on to take the set 25-22.
