SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. — Sophomore
Shelby Keltner delivered her fourth win of the season as she led Dominican University to its first ever NCAA DII era win over Biola University on Saturday in a two-game spilt in Los Angeles.
"I have a team that I trust, I trust our defense and offense, and I trust that the team is going to make plays behind me," Keltner said. "Celeste (Salas) has been working really hard to get me strikeouts and she's done great protecting the plate, so I just trust everyone to make plays."
Senior
Vanessa Porto led all Dominican hitters on the day, going a combined 3 of 7 whole notching a pair of RBIs. Keltner improved to 4-3 on the season with the win, while Leguria dropped to 1-1.
"During my at bats, I was really focused on tracking the ball and zoning down and out on the ball," Porto said. "I really just told myself to get on base in any way I can and to put the ball in play."
GAME ONE
Biola's bats were hot early as they helped the Eagles jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior pitcher
Rosa Leguria walked the second batter of the game before a bunt put runners on first and second. Another walk would load the bases and Biola capitalized on the free bases with a two-run double to left center.
Senior
Vanessa Porto earned the first Penguin hit of the day with a single in the second inning, but she would be left on base as the Eagles pitchers continued to stymie Dominican. Leguria found herself in a jam in the bottom of the inning when three straight singles loaded the bases, but she got herself out of the muck by flying out the next batter for the final out of the inning.
Dominican's next hit would have to wait for three innings as the Eagles continued to soar in the pitching circle, retiring the next 11 batters before freshman Mckenna Daley singled to left field in the sixth. Daley would be left on base to keep the Biola shutout intact before the Eagles doubled their lead with a two-out single off of junior
Alyssa Waltman in the bottom of the inning. This lead would prove to be enough as Biola walked off the diamond with a 4-0 victory.
GAME TWO
Keltner pitched a one-run complete game as she showed her Penguin pitching prowess, allowing just six hits through seven innings. Porto hit the replay button as, similar to the first game, she earned the first Dominican hit of the game, this time a single down the left field line in the first inning. A fielder's choice would swap junior
Peyton Mott onto first base in place of Porto, but she would be left there as the following batter flied out to right field.
Abie Nowak started the inning with a double before eventually being brought around the bags to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Biola would soon watch its lead slip away as Dominican put a pair on the scoreboard in the third.
Freshman
Faith Erb singled to start the third inning for the Penguins before stealing second two batters later.
Mady Christensen singled to the left side of the field to advance Erb to third before also stealing second base, putting runners on second and third. Porto tallied her second hit of the game as she doubled to left center, bringing both runners in and giving Dominican a 2-1 lead. Two more runners would reach the bases before innings end to load the bases, but a fly out ended the top of the inning.
Keltner allowed just two more hits through the remaining 15 outs, earning her fourth win of the season and bringing Dominican's overall record to 7-5.
Dominican now returns to Northern California for four games against the Academy of Art, with game one slated for 12 p.m. PST on Friday on Penguin Field.
