Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Duo of double-doubles help Penguins to 84-80 win

A duo of double-doubles from Julia Razo and Brittney Cedeno helped earn Dominican women's basketball its first win of the season, topping the Academy of Art 84-80.

The Urban Knights began the game on an 8-0 run before Razo cut into the lead with her first basket of the afternoon. A pair of baskets for the Academy of Art brought on an early double-digit lead for the Urban Knights at 13-2, but an 11-0 run courtesy of an onslaught of Penguin sharp shooting brought the game back even.

Cedeno's second long-ball of the afternoon kept the game even at 18 apiece with 49 seconds left in the first frame, but the Urban Knights matched Cedeno's beckoning call with a 3-pointer of their own shortly before the buzzer sounded, bringing the score to 21-18 after the opening frame.

Dominican earned its first lead of the game after Cedeno continued to exhibit her hot hand for deep, this time connecting on back-to-back 3's to give Dominican a 24-23 advantage. A pair of Jordan Charlton layups on consecutive trips down the court gave the Penguins a five-point lead before she also converted on a mid-range jumper just 1:56 later

The chain of Charlton connections was matched by an 11-0 Academy of Art as they regained the lead after Lauryn Manns hit a 3-ball to bring the game to 34-33. Razo added to her point total with eight seconds remaining in the half when she rolled in a layup, but the Urban Knights would take a 42-40 lead into the locker rooms when Manns converted on a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining.

Camryn Figueroa brought the game back even early in the third quarter before Dominican regained the lead with a Razo fast break bucket. Riley Friauf put the Penguins up by four with 7:30 remaining in the third stanza, the largest lead that either team saw in the frame as the two foes traded baskets before ending the quarter knotted up at 62-62.

Dominican came out firing in the final frame as they embarked on a 9-0 run to lead 71-62, forcing the Urban Knights to spend the remainder of the game playing catchup with the Penguins. The Academy of Art drew within one with 3:20 remaining in the game, but a Razo 3-pointer would eventually put the Penguins back up by five. This pattern continued as the Urban Knights again saw a one-point disadvantage with just 48 seconds remaining, but a trio of Cedeno free throws iced the game for the Penguins as they walked out with a 84-80 victory.

Razo led all Dominican scorers with 25 points and 12 rebounds, her second game in a row with 24+ points. Cedeno's 5 of 6 shooting from deep helped Dominican to a 64.3% shooting performance from behind the arc as she finished with career highs in points (24) and rebounds (16), while Friauf also snatched 16 rebounds of her own.

The Penguins now looks ahead to their rematch with the Academy of Art on Friday, with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. PST.
