ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Domincian women's tennis fell 5-2 Friday to Pacific West Conference newcomer Colorado Mesa at the Randy Ross Tennis Center.
Freshman
Zoe Coggins and senior
Amber Del Rosario got the Penguins (1-6) off to a strong start as they defeated Maike Waldburger and Carolena Campos 6-4 in No. 1 doubles. Lauren Thomas and Julianna Campos leveled the doubles portion for the Mavericks (7-6) with a 6-4 victory on court three before Issy Coman and Halle Romero barely held off their Dominican counterparts for the 7-5 victory on court two.
Waldburger kept the momentum going for CMU with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to open singles, while Coman added a 6-1, 6-3 victory on the top court to get within a point of the clinch. Sophomore
Kamar Alajeely got the Penguins on the board as she defeated Romero 6-4, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Coggins then took down Thomas 6-0, 6-3 to close the team score to 3-2.
Carolena Campos and
Taylor Lim were in a rubber match in No. 3 singles with Lim taking the first set 7-6 (8) and Campos battled back for the 6-4 win in the second set. Campos maintained the momentum from the second set to seal the match with a 6-0 set victory for the Mavericks.
Dominican will return home to take on the University of Hawai'i at Hilo on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
