Dominican University of California left Kennelly Field victorious on Saturday thanks to a 93
rd minute golden goal that came off the right foot of
Abbie Gould, giving Dominican a 2-1 win over the Academy of Art.
Dominican jumped out to a lead that lasted almost 55 minutes, with
Danielle Gonzalez opening the scoring in the 26
th minute. The goal came after a pass from
Tanya Bills found Gonzalez deep in the box, with Gonzalez finding the back of the net on what would be her first touch of a soccer ball in a competition as a collegiate athlete.
Dominican took the lead into the half and deep into the later stages of the game, but a tally by Art University's Sydney Cooke tied the game at one goal apiece with less than 10 minutes in regulation. The Urban Knights out shot the Penguins in regulation, earning a 8-6 advantage in total shots and a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. During the match, all 23 Dominican players saw the pitch for at least some amount of time, with coach
Kelly Coffey saying he though his team did a great job competing against a tough Urban Knight defense.
"The one thing we talked about before the game is to make sure we compete at a high level," coach Coffey said. "Academy of Art plays a tough, difficult style of soccer, but I thought we did a great job."
Two minutes into overtime,
Danielle Gonzalez broke free on the left side of the pitch and sprinted past a pair of defenders. Abigail Gould found herself with open space on the opposite side of the pitch, and Gonzalez sent a quick pass onto her foot. Academy of Art goalkeeper Lara Pflicke ran towards Gould in attempt to cut down the angle, but Gould played hero as she chipped the ball off the goalkeeper's hands and into the back of the net.
"I was just thinking 'I can't miss this right now,'" Gould said. "Danielle worked really hard and she won the ball back before setting me up really well. Our team worked hard, we deserved to win and I'm happy we did it."
Dominican will return to the pitch Thursday to take on Fresno Pacific at Ramirez Field. Game times and live coverage information will be updated on the schedule page when available.
