SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer controlled possession but fell 2-1 to Academy of Art to open its 2020-21 season Saturday morning at Kennelly Field.
Senior forward
Ivan Galvan led the team with two shots and one on goal and the Penguin (0-1) back line held the Urban Knights (2-0) to six shots on the day. Davis King had two saves for ART U and its offense took advantage on a set piece and a counter attack to claim the victory.
Dominican came out on the attack with six shots in the first 30 minutes while holding the Urban Knights to just one as it commanded the pitch. Academy of Art's first chance came in the 36th minutes as it earned a corner and Gilli Kristjansson placed a ball into the middle of the box connecting with the head of a diving Armando Rivera to take the 1-0 lead. The Penguins had two more corners and a shot by freshman defender
Nick Van der Waart van Gulik, but their struggles in the final third continued heading into the half.
Neither team could get much going on the offensive end in the second half until Adrian Cekala grabbed a loose ball and turned to fire a shot just inside the far post from 25-yards out to give the Urban Knights a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute.
Cole Porter returned the favor 10 minutes later as he took a ball off the foot of a defender and crossed the ball to
Eddie Silverbush for a shot which ART U could not clear off the line in time to cut the lead in half.
Dominican will return to the pitch Thursday to take on Fresno Pacific at Ramirez Field. Game times and live coverage information will be updated on the schedule page when availaible.
