Shooting woes contribute to lopsided loss at Fresno Pacific

Dominican was handed a 79-62 loss by Fresno Pacific on Tuesday as it shot just 36.9% from the field and 27.8% from deep.

The Penguins jumped out to an early lead to start the game, leading by as many as four as four of its five starters put points on the scoreboard before the first substitution. FPU changed the narrative and grabbed the lead at the 10:42 mark, holding onto it for the remainder of the game.

A scrum in the Sunbirds defensive end ensued with 6:59 remaining in the half as Chris Williams jumped on a loose ball before being immediately greeted by a pair of FPU defenders. Thomas Faustka joined the pileup party as he also sought to gather the fleeing basketball while the referees momentarily put away their whistles to let the play draw out. Upon the long-awaited whistle, a third Sun Bird jumped onto the pile, resulting in an FPU technical foul. Chris Williams missed the foul shot but Dominican held offensive possession and looked to draw even on the scoreboard with the Sunbirds.

Dominican would tie the ball game as Chris Williams was sent to the foul stripe for three shots after receiving contact from deep, converting on two-of-three and drawing the game even at 24. The even-score would be short-lived as Fresno finished the half on a 10-2 run, giving them a 34-26 lead at half.

Jaelan Ragsdale led all Penguin point-getters at the break with nine, followed by Christian Futch and Chris Williams with six and five points, respectively. Faustka gathered the most rebounds for Dominican in the first half with five, three of them coming on the same offensive possession.

The shooting woes continued in the second half for Dominican, converting on just three of its first 15 shots from the field as the Sunbirds soared with a 20-5 run to start the final frame.

Freshman Adam Parker looked to turn the tide with 9:06 remaining in the game as he emphatically blocked Fresno's Raine Mckeython at the rim before giving him the common stare down that often follows a play of this caliber. Parker would be given a technical foul for the snarl, and Mckeython converted on both shot attempts to give the Sunbirds a 20-point lead.

The Parker power move seemingly kick-started things for Dominican as they would proceed to find themselves on a 13-2 run and down by only nine, but this was as close as the Penguins would come as Fresno distanced itself from Dominican in the final minutes, earning a 79-62 victory.

Chris Williams found his scoring touch in the second half, finishing with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds. Ragsdale and Futch rounded out the trio of scorers that reached double digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Dominican now looks ahead to its second of three consecutive games against the Sunbirds as it travels back to Fresno on Friday for a 5pm PST tip-off.
