The Dominican University women's soccer team improved to 3-0 behind repeat performances from
Danielle Gonzalez and
Jaqueline Catano as the two teammates notched another goal and clean sheet, respectively. The 3-0 start marks the first time since 2008 that the Penguins started a season with three consecutive wins, and the first time as an NCAA program.
"We did a lot of good things," head coach
Kelly Coffey said. "Our energy was good, our ball movement — especially in the second half — was good, our defensive intensity and ball winning were both good, and we were ready for their counter attacks. We were solid in the back and midfield defensively, but our last third was week. We're only three games in after not playing for a year and a half, some skills needs sharpening but we are doing good."
Gonzalez added to her point total in the 30
th minute against the Academy of Art Tuesday, connecting on a cross-crease pass from Anika Cerini, her second assist in as many games. The Penguins controlled much of the match on Tuesday, sending seven total shots towards the Urban Knights goal in the first half alone.
"I saw their center back pinch in too much, so I knew I would be wide open on the side of the net," Gonzalez said. "I know Anika (Cerini) has strong crosses, so I stayed near the back post and was able to score on the open net."
The second half mirrored the play in the first half, with Dominican needing just six minutes to tally two more shot attempts.
Ayla Harris and
Gabrielle Wampler both tested Abby Burnell in the early stages of the second half, but Burnellkept a depleted Urban Knights team in the game as she would concede just one goal in the match.
Freshman
Jackie Lancaster was inserted back into the game in the 65
th minute of the match, immediately leaving her mark as she immediately controlled possession and helped Dominican reach the attacking third early and often. Lancaster sent her second of two shots towards the goal in the 72
nd minute, a shot that would narrowly miss the goal as the Academy of Art conserved the 1-0 deficit.
"They were giving me a lot of space, and I love having space when the ball is on my foot. I knew they were dropping off and not giving pressure, so I had a lot of time to bring the ball forward," Lancaster said.
The Penguin pressure continued until the later stages of the contest, with
Tanya Bills and
Audrey Nakashima notching three more shots in the 80th and 82nd minute. Bills would cap-off a Penguins pressure-filled performance with the final shot of the contest in the 89th minute, but Burnell kept her Urban Knights to just a one-goal deficit as the final horn sounded.
The Penguins finished with a dominating 20-3 advantage in total shots, while also leading 7-2 in shots on target.
Claire Brown finished the match with a team-high five total shots, while Lancaster, Tanya bills,
Audrey Nakashima and
Alana Berens all finished with two.
Dominican will return to the pitch this Sunday to take on the Academy of Art with the kickoff time to be announced. Updates will be made to the Penguins women's soccer schedule as soon as they are available.
