San Rafael, Calif. – Dominican University of California remained perfect in conference play after notching an impressive 84-51 victory over Chaminade Unviersity of Hawaii ahead of tomorrow's much anticipated contest against undefeated No. 8 Western Washington University.
"It was a good job by everybody, everyone was in the game and everyone contributed," associate head coach
Greg Rahn said. "It's good anytime we can pick up 24 turnovers and have 13 steals, so tonight was just a good, solid overall effort."
On an afternoon where the overall talent of the team was on full display, Dominican's superstar
Riley Friauf was needed for just 23 minutes, tallying 23 points while snatching eight rebounds. Senior
Errayanna Hatfield was next in line on the stat sheet, adding 21 points in just 20 minutes of action in addition to snagging eight rebounds, while graduate student
Abreanna Lake led all players with seven helpers, also posting eight points and an overwhelming six turnovers.
"Games like this we like to show that everyone on our team is a threat," Hatfield said. "This is the most talented team that I've ever been on. We have a deep bench, a ton of talent, and it's on nights like this that we show every team that watches us that we have multiple different threats."
Friauf started the scoring for Dominican with
Brittney Cedeno tallying her first assist of the afternoon on the opening basket of the matchup. Chaminade answered a pair of possessions later to bring the game even, but Friauf regained the Penguin lead when she was sent to the charity stripe on Dominican's next trip down the floor.
Freshman
Alaiyah San Juan and Lake etched their names onto the score sheet with baskets on back-to-back possessions before Friauf added more points to her stat line, giving Dominican an 11-5 advantage.
A 9-0 Dominican run put the finishing touches on an immaculate first quarter for the Penguins, highlighted by a duo of San Juan baskets including a 3-pointer from the top of the arc before time expired. The teams returned to the floor with the score reading 26-9 after the opening frame before Dominican expanded to its 9-0 run, adding 11 more points to the charge and eventually brining the Dominican streak to 20-0. A jumper from Chaminade's Sasha Phillip ended the Dominican run, but a long-ball from freshman
Alex Salise and a jumper courtesy of senior Hatfield spoiled the Silverswords party as Dominican lead by a lopsided score of 42-11, eventually taking a 47-20 lead into the half.
A Michaella Dean jumper for Chaminade welcomed the teams back to the hardwood, a shot that was soon answered by a pair of Friauf points that preceded a
Jordan Charlton open layup. Chaminade bounced back with a 3-pointer on its next possession, but a San Juan steal lead to a Friauf open layup after Cedeno sent her towards the basket unguarded.
A hail-mary pass was sent to Friauf by San Juan while she was standing on her own side of the logo, with Friauf finishing the football-style play with a soft layup off the glass. Chaminade answered with a lay-in of its own to bring the score to 55-29 before a successful Charlton foul shot increased the Dominican lead.
San Juan's quarterback capabilities continued to be on full display when she sent a perfect dime into the hands of Cedeno who quickly capitalized with a successful 3-pointer with 4:15 remaining in the third stanza. Friauf collected her 20
th and 21
st points on the ensuing trip down the court, converting on a heavily-contested lay-in that brought the score to 62-31.
"I like to give the ball to my teammates more than I like to shoot the ball," San Juan said. "I'm always trying to get people involved so they can get themselves more involved in the game. It leads to more overall energy and that's always what I'm looking for."
Chaminade found its stride late in the third quarter when it buried its shots on three consecutive possessions, but Dominican matched its pace to keep the 30-point lead. Lake garnered the final points of the quarter when she lost her defender before drilling a basket in the paint, giving Dominican a 68-37 advantage heading into the final frame.
Lake continued scoring when play resumed, hitting another short-range jumper when the teams retook the court. The Lake basket was matched by a Chaminade three, but pinpoint passing led to Hatfield eventually notching a reverse layup from under the bucket to set the score to 72-40.
Another trio of successful trips down the floor brought Chaminade within 26, but consecutive Hatfield buckets brought the Penguin advantage back to 30. Dominican began to splash its way to victory when Salise and Lake notched 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions after a Chaminade bucket, then welcoming in a media timeout with the score reading 84-51 courtesy of the sharp shooting.
Freshman
Ella Jimenez made her Penguin debut when the teams departed their respective benches following the timeout, with freshman
Jazmine Barnes leading the welcoming committee when she drained an open 3-pointer after receiving a pass from freshman
Julianne Ho.
Jiminez's welcome was not short lived as she found the twine for the final time in the game, earning a pair of points of a ball she laid off the glass for her first collegiate tallies as a basketball player. Dominican waltzed off the court when the final horn sounded, adding an impressive 89-57 victory onto its resume.
"I love this team and I love passing the ball to them. This entire team is buckets," Lake said. "That's what's been making this so fun.
