Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Melendez’s goal not enough

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Dominican University women's soccer gained a lead early in the second off of its Saturday afternoon game against Biola, but ultimately failed to earn the victory as the Eagles walked off Al Barbour Field with a 2-1 overtime victory.

Dominican spent much of the first portion of the opening stanza on the offensive side of the field, with junior Abbie Gould recording the first shot after sending a screecher that rang off the top pipe before sending another strike towards the lower-90, this time being stopped by Biola goalkeeper Briana Ruelas. A pair of Penguin corner kicks and a shot by senior Sofia Odron highlighted Dominican's time on the offensive zone, with Dominican spending the majority of the opening 10 minutes near the Eagles goal.

After Biola turned the tide and spent much of the following 10 minutes near the Dominican goal, Dominican slowly marched down the field before junior Aiden Marquez capped off the Penguin march with a shot that was saved by Ruelas.

Neither team was able to generate favorable scoring chances throughout the ensuing 20 minutes, but Dominican senior goalkeeper Nicole Maler showed her prowess near the end of the opening half with a pair of spectacular saves.

Her first dramatic stop came in the 41st minute when Eagles forward Jess Hase was sent streaking towards the goal on a partial breakaway, but Maler met her at the top of the box and steered the ball aside with a diving stop before making another stop just 10 seconds later. History repeated itself in the 43rd minute when Maler was again forced to power-glide at the top of the box after another Eagle forward was sent in on a partial breakaway, with Maler again reigning victorious as she and the rest of the Penguins squad marched into halftime knotted up at 0-0 with much thanks to her expertise between the pipes.

Dominican again brought the pressure early in the second half, earning a corner kick just one minute into the frame. After exchanging pleasantries over the ensuing 10 minutes, the Penguins found the scoreboard first courtesy of a point-blank shot by sophomore Alejandra Melendez that was sent her way by senior Katie Bianchi and Gould, giving Dominican a one-goal lead in the 56th minute. Melendez's goal was her second as a Penguin.

A pair of Dominican kicks missed the target in the minutes that followed, but it wasn't until the 72nd minute that another ball would find both the target and the back of the net, with Biola earning a celebration this time around, with the ball beating senior Jaqueline Catano — who replaced Maler at half — after juggling off the feet of a few players deep inside the box.

The two squads would need overtime to settle the score, and it would be Biola that struck early off a Halie Jamir corner kick that was headed over the outstretched arms of Maler who, again, found herself protecting the net for the Penguins.

Marquez led all Penguins shooters with three shots that were sent towards the target, with Gould and Melendez each tallying two shots of their own.  Maler and Catano weathered three shots and two shots, respectively, with each keeper allowing one goal.

Dominican women's soccer will now look ahead to Thursday, Nov. 11, when it returns home to Kennelly Field to take on the Academy of Art at 11 a.m. PST.
