Late Lumberjack surge propels Humboldt State over Dominican

Humboldt, Calif. — Dominican University men's basketball fell to Humboldt State University by a score of 74-68 on Saturday.

Sophomore Adam Parker netted 23 points, five rebounds and four assists while graduate student Zamaria Odom notched 15 points and six rebounds, with fellow graduate students Justin Brown and Anthony Dennis adding 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

The Penguins embarked on a 7-0 run from the opening tip courtesy of a pair of Brown jumpers and a Parker 3-pointer before Humboldt's Cam Timmons finally put his team on the board. The Dominican lead was eventually erased just six minutes later when AJ Sims put the ball in off the glass for Humboldt State to bring his team within one at the 5:43 mark of the opening half.

Dominican continued to fend off Humboldt State with Parker and Sims trading successful free throws for the two foes, but the Lumberjacks gained the advantage for the first time in the game with 9:26 to go in the frame when Will Johnson notched an easy layup. Odom tallied the game's ensuing four points to give the Penguins a 19-16 advantage, but a Thomas Melonja long-ball brought the game back even at 19-19 on Humboldt State's next possession.

The squads continued the trend of trading buckets with neither team leading by more than two possessions for the remainder of the half, but it was Dominican that found itself on top after freshman Jake Blazona sent the ball into the hands of Brown who converted on a tough layup with 30 ticks left on the clock, giving Dominican a 35-34 lead heading into the half.

Parker welcomed the foes back to the floor with a 3-pointer that gave Dominican a four-point lead, but Humboldt's Jaden Edwards played copycat less than a minute later and drained a deep-ball of his own to bring the Lumberjacks back within one before hitting another 3-pointer that handed Humboldt State a 40-38 advantage.

Dominican saw its last advantage with 13:34 remaining in the game when Brown slammed the ball home before converting on a shot from downtown to give Dominican a five-point, 49-44 lead. The Lumberjacks needed just 33 seconds to axe the Penguin lead when Melonja sank another 3-pointer, evening the score soon after on a free-throw with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The Penguins enjoyed a tie game for the last time with 8:11 remaining after Odom converted a charity shot to bring the score to 53 apiece, but Dominican failed to keep pace as the ensuing minutes saw Humboldt with an 8-2 run that brought the score to 63-55. A pair of Michael Diaz free throws halted the Lumberjack storm and brought Dominican back to life as it saw itself within four points with 11 seconds left on the clock after another Parker three-pointer and an Odom free throw brought the score to 70-66, but Humboldt State eventually trotted off the hardwood with a 74-68 victory.

Dominican now looks ahead to Tuesday, November 30th when it plays host to Pacific Union College at 7 p.m. PST.
