Dominican dominates Holy Names in chippy season finale

Hayward, Calif. — Junior Christopher Barrios notched his third goal of the season while senior Roberto Garcia added a pair of his own as Dominican University of California routed Holy Names University 3-0 in the teams' final match of the season.

Dominican was on the attack early and often, tallying two shots on goal in the first six minutes courtesy of Garcia and freshman Diego Grande. Dominican's first of four yellow cards, and first of nine total cards given to the two teams in the match, came early in the 16th minute after an unsuccessful slide tackle attempt from Aboubacar Cisse. This yellow card set the tone for the rest of the match with the two teams often engaging in rough stuff, with Dominican seeing itself on the receiving end of the majority of the carding.

The Penguins' first goal came in the 36 minute of the first half when freshman Alexandre Bernier shed the defense after a quick halt sent his defender flying by, giving him time to pass the ball into the box and onto the foot of Barrios. Barrios made a quick move to his left to create space around his defender before sending the ball to the opposite side of the frame and giving Dominican the 1-0 lead, a lead that it would later take into halftime.

Dominican's second goal came just three minutes into the second half when a Penguin forward was taken down just inches from the top of the box by the Hawks' Amine Abdelouahid, with the play resulting in an eventual red card after the players dispersed from their conversations with the official. Garcia confidently stepped into the free kick, finessing the ball over the airborne Holy Names wall before placing it superbly into the upper-right 90, doubling the Dominican lead.

Dominican's third and final goal came in the 78th minute when Garcia took the ball into the box, juked a pair of defenders, then placed the ball onto his left foot before rifling it into the bottom corner of the net, tallying his second goal of the evening. This came just minutes after Garcia sent a screecher past a diving Mark Redfield, but he couldn't beat the post as the ball ricocheted off the left side of the woodwork.

The rough stuff hit its peak in the 89th minute after a battle for the ball between senior Cameron Baca and Guilherme Martins led to a failed attempt to take Baca to the ground via jersey pull. As the scrum ensued, a sprinting Dylan Finley came from 20 yards out, knocking Martins to the ground before the rest of the crowd commenced for the shoving match. By the time all was said and done, Finley and Martins shook hands after each receiving a yellow card for their involvement in the brouhaha.

The horn sounded less than a minute later as Dominican reigned victorious in the season finale over the rival Hawks. Garcia led all shooters with four shots while three found the target, while senior Kieran Vrklan tallied three shots of his own.

Dominican finishes the season with an 8-6-2 overall record, while scoring a 3-6-1 record in PacWest Conference play.
