Marquez golden in her final match for Penguins

HAYWARD, Calif. – Senior forward Cassisdy Marquez calmly put home a penalty kick in extra time for Dominican women's soccer for the 1-0 golden-goal victory Saturday over Holy Names at Pioneer Field.

Senior goalkeepers Nicole Maler and Jaqueline Catano combined for the shutout with help from their backline and midfield that made life difficult on the Hawks' attack. Dominican held a 14-7 advantage in shots with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal while collecting six corners and conceding none. Nyah Summers did everything she could to keep HNU in the game with eight saves on the night to send the game to extra time.

After playing 90 scoreless minutes, the teams went into extra time but the Penguins had controlled the momentum and possession since the halftime break. It did not take them long to find themselves in a position for the victory as the Hawks' Briana Santillan committed a foul inside the box 35 seconds into the extra period. Marquez then stepped to the spot and calmly put a ball inside the right post to beat Summers and help the Penguins end their season on a high note with victories over both of its Bay Area rivals.

Dominican controlled the game early as it maintained possession in the attacking half of the field with Alejandra Melendez and Abbie Gould each testing Summers in the first 10 minutes of the match, but Summers turned their shots away. The Hawks were unable to break the Penguins backline until Alyssa Acuna created enough space to send a shot on frame in the 24th minute, but senior goalkeeper Nicole Maler made the save. After earning a corner on the counter-attack, junior midfielder Gabrielle Wampler tested Summers again in the 27th minute, but Summers once again made the save. The keepers continued to play well with Maler finishing the half with four saves and Summers collecting five.

The Penguin backline and midfield stood strong in the second half as they limited the Hawks to three shots in the period with none on frame. Dominican looked to have a golden opportunity to break the scoreless tie as sophomore Danielle Gonzalez timed her run perfectly to get behind the defense and go one-on-one with Summers in the 76th minute, but Summers made the diving stop on the shot near post to keep her net clean.

Gonzalez was a factor throughout the game pushing the attack leading her team with three shots with all of them on goal.
