SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 26-28, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 Friday night to Holy Names to conclude a four-game homestand at the Conlan Recreation Center.
Senior outside hitter
Kiana Pelton led the Penguins (1-14, 1-5 PacWest) with eight kills and three blocks, while senior outside hitter
Mariah Ahid added six kills and four blocks. Lauren Sera led the Hawks (5-11, 2-6 PacWest) with 13 kills and 23 digs.
The teams traded leads and ties to begin the first set with Dominican finally pulling ahead as Ahid and junior middle blocker
Edee Leslie combined for back-to-back blocks to help spark a 3-point run to take the 13-10 lead. The Hawks then helped a 4-0 run with several errors to push the Penguins lead to six. Dominican returned the favor with several errors of their own during a 7-1 run that tied the set at 20. Sierra Allen and Sera added back-to-back kills moments later to help the Hawks get a 23-21 lead as they looked to take control in the set. With HNU at set point, it briefly looked like the Hawks had been awarded the clinching point but a touch was called awarding Pelton the kill and Ahid then combined with freshman middle
Ella Jimenez for a block to tie the set. After trading the next few points, senior
Tiffany Wong had back-to-back kills to clinch the 28-26 victory.
Dominican got off to a strong start in the second set as a kill by Jimenez gave it the 5-2 lead, but several errors fueled the Hawks' 4-0 run in response as they took the lead. Another 3-point burst of all errors helped HNU push the lead to three and Jasmine Yun then found the floor for two quick kills to spark a 4-0 run that gave the Hawks the 13-7 lead. The rest of the set was played almost evenly as HNU held on to tie the match at 1-1.
Saupuni Mavaega led the Hawks in the third set with two kills and a block in the early moments to give them the 6-3 lead. After trading points for several minutes, Ayanna Barham found the floor on a pair of kills to lead the Hawks on a 4-point burst that pushed its lead to 18-12. It was all the room HNU would need as the teams traded points for the remainder of the set as the Hawks took the 2-1 lead in the match.
Lille Tuivailala stepped up for the Hawks to begin the fourth set with three kills in a 6-1 run to take the early four-point lead. Sera then capped a 4-0 run with a kill to make it 10-4, but Dominican began to slowly chip away at the deficit on a handful of Hawk errors. After Jimenez combined with Ahid and then Pelton for a pair of blocks to make it 17-13, Mavaega sparked a 5-0 run to close a door on the momentum and put HNU in control. HNU maintained its lead the rest of the way to close out the match victory.
Dominican will hit the road to beginning its trip to Hawaii with the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at 7 p.m. HST at UHH Gymnasium.
