SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 2-1 Tuesday afternoon on an extra time by Hawai'i Pacific University at Kennelly Field.
The game was largely played in the midfield with limited scoring opportunities for both the Penguins (2-6-3, 1-4-0 PacWest) and Sharks (3-7-1, 2-2-1 PacWest) with most coming later in the match. Dominican held a 12-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, but HPU made the most of their limited opportunities to take the victory.
After playing 18 minutes of extra time, a foul in the box gave the Sharks a chance at the golden goal with just under two minutes remaining in the match. Kayli Ann Yoshioka stepped to the spot and put the ball inside the left post to secure the golden goal.
After a largely uneventful first half, both teams found offensive chances. Sophomore midfielder
Alejandra Melendez had the first quality opportunity for either team in the 51st minute as a ball came to her feet inside the box and she attempted to heel the ball inside the near post, but Madi DePhillips was there to make the save. Caylie Uyema then gave HPU the 1-0 lead in the 70th minute as she took a ball away from a defender inside the box and quickly put a shot in the back netting.
Melendez tied the game as she dribbled a ball down the center of the defense created a bit of space and loosed a shot to the back post to beat the keeper in the 82nd minute. Senior forward
Tanya Bills found some space with just over a minute remaining in the half and tested DePhillips low, but the save was made to send the game to extra time.
HPU had a flurry of chances in the 91st minute as Brittny Ihara and Uyema nearly got behind the Penguins' defense, but their three shots within seconds of each other were all blocked before they could reach the keeper. Senior midfielder
Gabrielle Wampler then sent a long shot high but DePhillips used all her length to stop it from crossing underneath her crossbar in the 94th minute.
Dominican will return to Kennelly Field to take on Chaminade on Saturday at noon PDT.
