Dominican women's basketball drops contest at Fresno Pacific

The Dominican University women's basketball team dropped a 74-66 contest to Fresno Pacific University on Jan. 23, 2021, despite a 25-point effort by senior Riley Friauf

Dominican fell behind early in the game after scoring the first basket and faced an uphill climb until 7:02 remaining in the third quarter when it finally regained the lead. The two teams traded baskets midway through the second quarter as Dominican began to chip away at a Fresno lead that would be as large as nine points, with Hailey Stewart earning her first points as a collegiate athlete off a pair of successful free throws that brought the game within four. The Sunbirds would again add to their lead before the end of the half and headed into the locker rooms with a 41-32 advantage.

Dominican took aim at the Sunbird lead early in the second half as it took just 2:58 seconds for the Penguins to erase the entire nine-point halftime deficit and retake the lead. The Penguins led by as many as three as the two teams traded baskets with neither team owning more than a one possession lead for the entire third quarter. By the end of the frame, Dominican garnered a one-point advantage.

Fresno's Felicia Dourva erased the lead just 10 seconds into the final frame after draining a pair of baskets from the foul stripe, and Dominican would never be able to retake the advantage. Fresno's Rachel Berry put the game out of reach with 46 seconds remaining after converting on a layup that gave the Sunbirds an eight-point lead and a 74-66 victory.

Friauf led all scorers with 25 points, while Julia Razo would also see double digits with 15. Friaf and junior Erryanna Hatfield both snagged eight rebounds, while freshman Julianna Ho dished out a team-high four assists. Freshman Rylee Sarasua saw her first minutes at the post-secondary level, logging time near the end of the game.
