SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball fell 64-59 Thursday evening to Notre Dame de Namur at the Conlan Center.
Senior forward
Jerusha Paine led the Penguins (10-17, 7-14 PacWest) with her 16th double-double of the year with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard
Julia Razo added 11 points and four rebounds, while freshman guard
Brittney Cedeno finished with six assists. Sharon Roldan led the Argonauts (9-18, 7-14 PacWest) with 18 points and Nikki Miller added 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting with four rebounds.
Cedeno and
Marisa Mondave hit early 3-pointers to held Dominican build an 8-4 lead, but Roldan answered with a 3-pointer of her own to cut it to one. Razo then sparked a 7-0 Penguin run with a make behind the arc, but once again NDNU responded scoring the last eight points of the quarter to tie the game 15-15 heading into the second.
Jayleen Solorzano-Diaz laid the ball in for the Argonauts to take the two point lead and extended it to 25-19 on a fastbreak layup from Auren Isaacson. Dominican scored four quick points as Cedeno found Paine alone on an inbounds for a layup and then
Camryn Figueroa stole the ball and laid it in to cut the deficit to 30-27 with 1:42 remaining in the half. Roldan knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to end the half and give NDNU the 36-27 lead at the half.
After the Argonauts built a 13 points lead in the opening five minutes of the third quarter, Paine spun around her defender for two before Razo knocked five quick points to cut the lead to six. Paine pushed the run to 9-0 with a pair of free throws to cut the NDNU lead to 46-42 heading to the final quarter.
The teams traded buckets in the opening minutes of the fourth until Marlene Salazar knocked down an elbow 3-pointer and Miller laid it in to extend the lead to 55-46 with 6:06 remaining. Razo knocked down a corner 3-pointer on an assist from Paine to respond and cut the lead to five heading to the final five minutes of the game. Solorzano-Diaz answered with a corner 3-pointer of her own to cap a 5-0 run to extend the lead back to 10 with 3:40 remaining and they were able to hold off late runs by the Penguins to hold on for the victory.
The Penguins will conclude their season on the road Saturday against Fresno Pacific at 2:30 p.m. PST at the Special Events Center.
